Invitation Etiquette
by Wedding Paper Divas

Children Guests…
If you’re not sure about whether or not a child of an invited couple should receive his or her own invitation, a good rule of thumb is that any young guest over 16 years old should receive his or her own invitation.

No, it’s not the fun part of planning your wedding, but it’s an integral part and doing it right away will cause you far less stress in the long run and allow you to plan your wedding in a much more organized fashion.

This meeting should be with whomever will be paying or helping to pay for the wedding.

But first, get your vision just right…To get more tips on how to kick off your wedding right, click here.

I just spent a fun and educational weekend at Bloggy Bootcamp in San Francisco.  After the conference, we had a fun time at Club Slide where Igor the Bartender from Russia concocted a special drink called the Siberian Slipper.  One lady described the taste as a watermelon jolly rancher but not as sweet.  I have to disagree with that description, but to each their own.  For me, I could really taste the pear from the pear vodka and another flavor that I couldn’t quite put my finger on…turned out to be Elderberry from the liqueur St. Germain.  Regardless, it was a hit with everyone in attendance and made for a very pretty ‘martini’ drink as well.  Here’s the lo-down on how to make it (sorry, I didn’t get exact measurements, so you’ll have to experiment on your own):

Ingredients:

Pear Vodka (Grey Goose Poire was used in ours)
Juice of 2 wedges of lime
St. Germain

Instructions:

Chill martini glass with ice.  In a cocktail shaker shake the pear vodka and St. Germain.  Empty ice out of martini glass, pour in contents of shaker, squeeze the juice of 2 wedges of lime into martini glass.  Garnish with a lime.

Wedding pictures hold some of the happiest memories of a lifetime, so be sure you consider all the angles when preparing to be photographed on the big day.

Exfoliate and moisturize- Don’t forget that the most important step is good skincare for a clean, smooth base. Soft, supple skin will be the best canvas for any makeup to look great on.

Don’t go changing- Brides shouldn’t try new skincare products, or anything that may irritate skin during the wedding countdown. Don’t be tempted to get cosmetic or skin treatments too close to the date, especially if you haven’t experienced the procedure before.

Build from a solid foundation- Be sure that your foundation is the right color and formulation for your skin. Color correcting concealers, like green/yellow for redness, and peach/yellow for undereye circles are a much better choice than simply layering on more makeup. Remember that redness will be easily picked up in photographs so take care to balance that out, and stay away from more pink based foundations.

Define eyes and brows- While its important to line and define eyes so they pop in photos, keep in mind that dark shadow will make eyes recede and look smaller. For big bright eyes, highlight the inner corners and brow bone with an off-white, light pink or pale gold shadow or crayon.

Make sure brows are properly framing the face- everyone looks better and younger with defined brows. Fill the arches with powder or a solid pigment and brush.

Skip the glitter- Radiance-enhancing or shimmery foundations make faces look too slick and shiny for photos, so if you must, keep the sheen only on cheekbones and the cupid’s bow for highlighting purposes. Always finish the t-zone with powder, and and blot any oiliness as needed.

Consider your lighting- Do take the time to stop and think about if the event/ photos will be taking place indoors or out, and at what time of day. Indoor photos will be taken with flash, so it’s important to use powder to combat shine and to also be sure foundation is matched well. If outdoors, soften makeup a bit as it can easily look too heavy or harsh in sunlight.

Personalize the look- The older you are, the more important it is to avoid shimmery eye makeup, as it tends to bring attention to fine lines. Black eyeliner can also look too harsh for older women (same goes for liquid liner). Many fair blondes may be more suited for eyeliner and mascara in the brown tones so as to not look overdone.

Searching around the internet today, I found this cute beach themed wedding done by L.A. Botanicals in May 2008.  What is especially surprising and original is I don’t see the beach anywhere in sight.  In fact, the area itself almost lends itself to more of a garden theme, but the decor was done in such a great beach themed way.  I absolutely love the starfish hanging from the greenery altar.  Here are our 2 favorite pics, to see more, you can visit L.A. Botanicals blog:

KamikazeYes, we’re posting from TheSpir.it.com again.  We can’t help it, they have good info that our readers will love too.  This week they discuss the Kamikaze, a drink that many think of as an ‘amateur’ drink meant to be slammed like a shot.  Goodness knows, it was once my favorite shot and never did I think it could be an actual classy drink.  But now, now that they write this and I think about yummy those shots actually were, I find myself asking, “why not?  why can’t this delicious cocktail be exactly that – a classy cocktail?”  The ingredients don’t scream ghetto, or amateur, so why has the Kamikaze turned into ‘that’ drink?

Here is how to make a Kamikaze and you can see by the ingredients and the pretty picture from The Spirit that it would, in fact, be a wonderful and refreshing Signature Cocktail for your wedding – perhaps you’d like to name it a special name personalized to the two of you just so your guests drink it in a more sipping and refined manner rather than trying to slam it like a shot;)

The Kamikaze

Ingredients:

1 1/2 oz Vodka
2 teaspoons Cointreau
1/2 oz Lime juice
Lime wedge (for garnish)
Ice

Preparation:

In a ice-filled cocktail shaker, combine the vodka, Cointreau, and lime juice. Shake vigorously. Strain into an ice-filled rocks glass, garnish with a lime wedge.

Legend has it that the Kamikaze was first poured on an American Naval base in Japan in the late 1940s, and that the name (not unlike the Zombie) is meant to give you an idea of its effect.  Click here to keep reading the entire story from The Spirit

I love having creative friends.  One of my friends, we’ll call her Amy (because that’s her name) is always surprising me with little cute things she’s made – from her son’s homemade birthday party invitations, to halloween cards to a sweet Spring gift, she has definitely mastered the art of making scrapbooking cool and quaint and sweet without being cheesy, or ‘bad-crafty’.

This month, Amy was invited to a friend’s bridal shower.  These friends of hers are like many couples nowadays who have 2 of everything and just don’t need much in the way of traditional wedding gifts.  While my friend is happy to buy off the registry for the wedding gift, she wanted to give something more personal and from the heart for the bridal shower gift.  And, this is what she created…

Do It Yourself Bridal or Baby Shower Gift

Cute, no?  The bucket consists of a bottle of champagne, some home-made notecards and a basil plant.  For each item, Amy made little cards that say the following:

For the champagne – toast often to everything you are grateful for

For the note cards – love notes are cool

For the basil plant – plant things together and watch them grow

and…for the card that she gave the couple she wrote something to the effect of   ”when life gets busy it’s the little things that are easily forgotten and these are a few things we always try to remember”.

This is a great sentiment for the couple getting married or having a child.  We are often so caught up in the daily grind that we forget what got us to this pivotal point in our relationship.  It is always important to slow down and remember how we fell in love with each other.  If a wonderful hand-made gift like this helps to slow you down and toast to each other, or write a love note or two, then I say it’s the perfect gift a person could receive;)

What about you?  Do you have any ideas of great DIY party or shower gifts?  Have you received that perfect hand-made gift that made you want to get crafting?  How about the bad stuff; anything stick out as just ‘bad crafty’?  We would love to hear your comments.  Until then, Happy Crafting and Have a Fantabulously Eventful Day!

So, you think you know your friends do you?  It’s been said a thousand times – if you want to know who your real friends are, just have a wedding.  It brings out the best and worst in people.  And, for some reason, even the (usually) most tactful, level-headed people do, ask and say some of the most tactless, rude and selfish things.

Take my friend Mary (names changed to protect the ‘not so’ innocent) for example.  Mary is getting married in November.  She has very specific ideas of how she wants her wedding to look (as most brides do), has picked out her exact colors to fall in line with her ‘not over the top’ Fall Theme – a warm sienna brown and burnt orange.  She shares the exciting news along with decor ideas with her ‘friends’ who later become her bridesmaids who know full well the colors of the wedding.  One would surmise at this point that being a bridesmaid will likely require you to wear one of these chosen colors.  Also, one would surmise that accepting said responsibility of becoming a bridesmaid, you are ready to wear whatever your friend chooses because, let’s face it, that’s one of the main jobs of the bridesmaid.  My friend Mary was cognizant of price and body shapes and struggled long and hard to accomodate both.  So, she was befuddled, nay hurt when one bridesmaid in particular (we’ll call her Katy) tried to change Mary’s mind about the color she chose for the dress.  “Okay” Mary thought, “Katy just wanted to express her opinion, we’ve talked it out, she understands this is the color I really want and that’s that.”  A few weeks go by, and all women head to the dress shop to try on dresses when in a complete and total Bridesmaidzilla moment, Katy announces, “I don’t want to spend this kind of money on a dress I will never wear and if you can’t change the color, then I think I need to step down from being in your wedding”.  Mary, understandably, was hurt, shocked and quite frankly kinda pissed.  She stood her ground and explained to Katy that she was very sorry she felt that way, but that she would not be changing the color of the dress and hoped that she would still come to the wedding and enjoy herself as a guest (that’s the classy way to handle such a situation – you go Mary).  Katy, probably being a bit shocked, proceeded to add salt to the wound by exclaiming, “well both me and [Maid of Honor] don’t like the color of the dress and wanted to tell you earlier”.  Ummm, rude and immature much?

I feel horrible for my friend Mary.  She is a good person who is not expecting more from a friend than any other Bride would.  She is not requiring Katy to stuff her bra, get fake nails, dye her hair or any number of Bridezilla requests.  She simply asked for her bridesmaid to wear her chosen color of dress as discussed ad nauseum prior to going to the dress shop.  I am pissed that Katy is so selfish.  How dare she turn what is supposed to be a fun and exciting day for everyone into a day/moment all about her.  Quite frankly, who gives a rat’s butt what a bridesmaid is wearing?  Who’s looking at her anyway?  At the most, and I do mean at the most a bridesmaid could request to bring a change of clothes once all the pictures are done, but even that crosses the boundary into rude territory.

If you are ever asked to be a bridesmaid remember that this day is not about you.  Selfish behavior is not acceptable from any party (Bridemaid, Bride, parents, etc.).  Common courtesy and asking yourself if your actions or words could be hurtful before doing or saying something can go a long way.  It is one day – wear the darn dress and get on with your life.  Either you can afford to spend the money for your friend’s special day or not.  It has nothing to do with spending money on a dress you will never wear again.  If you couldn’t afford it, you should have said something when you were originally asked.  If you know you’re too selfish, then decline immediately with honesty by explaining you simply don’t make a good bridesmaid.

It’s just ugly and gross to do this to someone you consider a friend.

I seriously don’t know what my fascination (aka excessive obsessiveness) is with garden weddings this season.  I just love them.  The pictures they conjur in my mind’s eye are so romantic and ethereal.  Plus, I love the look of hand-made items.  As any reader of this blog knows, I am an Etsy fanatic (as I should be since we have our own Artsy Chic Etsy store), so I created a cool treasury of Etsy items that give inspiration for a Summer or Spring Garden Wedding – click here to view the full inspiration board

As usual, Etsy finders have made me happy.  Today’s Etsy finds (found by Etsy Finder Heather) will you put you on your block’s party map.  They had me at the Citrus Slip-on Coasters!  How super cute and original are those?  The problem with finding all this great party fare is I don’t think I have enough free weekends in summer to throw all the parties I would want to throw (nor that cash, but that’s another matter), so I’m stuck dreaming up one great party after another using these Etsy finds as inspiration.

Vintage cooloer, vintage purple glasses, vintage stirrers and all the other cool vintage fare for my (imaginary) retro cool summer party; Citrus Slip-on Coasters, summer paper lanterns, party summer umbrellas for my (again imaginary) ultra-hot summer cocktail party; Toy Wood Boat for a sailing themed kids party; DIY Poolside Party Shades for my (yes, yes imaginary – especially since we don’t have a pool) Wet N’ Wild Pool Party; Lanterns for Nostalgic Lighting for my garden themed wedding (totally imaginary since I’m already married – hee hee); and so so so much more.  Not sure where I would store it all, but I know I could use it all for all sorts of fantastically great parties;)

Okay, and one shameless plug for own cute little Etsy item – our summer bbq Parent & Child Apron (perfect for a Father’s Day Gift) , would be such a cute apron to wear when bbq’ing at your next summer party.

One of the many aspects I enjoyed about being a wedding planner was when I was able to be creative and create specialty items for my couples.  As we have now changed to being lifestyle and wedding bloggers, we wanted to be sure we were still able to provide those custom specialty items we love to create for the newly engaged, newly pregnant and new parents too.  How did we do this?  We created an etsy store.  You can find our store (with only a few items right now) at http://www.etsy.com/shop/yourlifevents.  We currently have some cool place card holders, some nifty aprons for kids and custom hand-illustrated watercolor wedding maps.  Pictured above is an example of two maps we have done thus far.

Cheryl & Dave were looking for the simply elegant beach wedding.  Big, over the top centerpieces weren’t their thing.  They were looking for the simple beauty that can only be found in nature and more specifically the nature we call our own here in San Diego – The Beach.

We designed a fresh theme with lavender and chartreuse along with custom table numbers and centerpieces.

The couple wanted to make sure their guests had a great time dancing the night away, and after a delicious meal catered by Martino’s Catering, they danced and partied till the bitter end.

I recently started sponsoring 2 little girls through World Vision Charity.  We are encouraged to write letters and send along pictures to these children (sent my first letter the day after I received the info packets) and are allowed to send small items that fit into an envelope just a little bigger than a regular envelope, but there are restrictions – such as no jewelry or items that could be construed as expensive.

While I haven’t received any letters from either of these children yet (mail is a little slow in other countries, plus the whole volcano fiasco slowed my letters down I’m sure), I find myself looking at their pictures every day on my wall and wanting to let them know that there is someone a half a world away who is thinking about them.  I feel that while my money is going to their community to help them all thrive (a very important goal indeed), it is the personal touch that sustains people.

I do not keep it to myself that I had a rough childhood, but it was those people in my life who always made me aware that they loved me and that they were there for me whom I think helped me be the strong and happy person I am today.  It is for this reason that I want to let these girls know as often as I can that there is someone out there who cares about them, who knows that they can succeed in life and who believes in them.

This week, I thought I would make some little scrapbook journals personalized just for them.  In doing so, another lady whom I work with asked me to make one for her little girl who she is sponsoring.  This got me to thinking…perhaps all sorts of children would like a little journal to call their own, or even a wedding couple would like to use a hand-made book like this as their wedding guestbook.  So, I’ve decided to make some more and post them on our etsy store.  In the meantime, check out the ones I made for these 3 little girls.  One of the girls, sadly, is not in school so I put the country flag and map as well as the world map in her journal – something to ponder (I loved maps as a child) and I had a friend translate the William Wordsworth quote, “Fill the paper with the breathings of your heart” in to Swahili for her.

Hope you enjoy.

I’m not sure where I originally found this, but I can say that I did not author it – it is the verbage I found and used on my own rehearsal dinner invitations, so I thought I’d share it with all of you in case you’re looking for some creative wording for your rehearsal dinner invitations.

Tonya from Circle City Planners featured on YourLifEvents Wedding BlogToday’s featured article is written by Tonya Shadoan of Circle City Planners.  We love this spunky, fun loving wedding planner.  Talk to her or any of her team members and your sold – they have impeccable taste and will help you take your wedding to the next level!

When it comes to Circle City Planners and Circle City Designers what color comes to mind??? Well, you guessed it … PINK. Not only do we love pink,we live and breathe pink from our office, to our clothes, right down to the shoes we wear, it’s all about pink.

I fought loving and showcasing pink for the longest time when I began my business years ago. But what I found out was that I always went back to the color that made me feel most comfortable. PINK, PINK, PINK.

It’s so fun to see the grooms come into our office and sit in our girly, zebra chairs surrounded by the bubble gum shades on the walls. I try not to scare them off too much, but warn them that the next few months to almost a year they will spend hours in that exact chair smiling at their lovely brides.

But pink doesn’t have to be you, that’s the great thing about my job. I help you discover your favorite color.

What does your favorite color say about you?  We take color very personal, finding and discovering what soothes your soul when it comes to your wedding colors. Are you wanting to create a cozy, warm environment OR are you trying to convey a wild, fun-entertaining feel for your event? No matter what color you decide, it’s all about how it makes you feel.

I don’t like to design a wedding around colors; I like to find inspirational elements in your environment that evoke a feeling between you and your groom. That’s the difference between a good designer and a GREAT one. So the next time you are at Home Depot, go look at those paint swatches and see which ones make you smile.

Wedding Love and Hugs,
Tonya

What Do Your Wedding Colors Say About You?

Your wedding colors can greatly impact the style and ambience of your special day. Some colors create a fun, vibrant environment while others create a sense of sophistication. Choosing a color palette that reflects your personality will help create the style you want at your wedding.

White: White is symbolic of purity and innocence. This adds a clean, fresh color to any palette. Brides who choose white as part of their color scheme might be seeking a color that adds simplicity to their wedding.

Black: This is a conservative choice for any bride and compliments almost any color. Black is a classic, never trendy, modern choice for a bride. Brides who want to create an ambience of sophistication might choose black as part of their color palette.

Red: This is a romantic choice for brides. It can represent a bride who is outgoing or ambitious. Brides who choose red as part of their color palette might be wanting to add a dramatic feel to their special day.

Pink: Brides who choose pink might be affectionate and nurturing. This adds a “girlish” feel to any wedding color palette. Light pinks can add a soft, romantic feel to a wedding day while brighter pinks add a sense of fun and excitement.

Purple: This color is often associated with royalty. A bride who chooses purple might be charming and witty. Purple often adds a sense of luxury to any color palette. This color was the hottest color in 2010 so brides who choose this color might be trendy.

Orange: Brides who choose orange are bold and spontaneous! Orange is a trendy hue that is typically found during the summer or fall months. Brides who choose orange might be extremely social and have an excitement for life!

Yellow: A bride who is cheerful and optimistic might choose this color as part of their wedding day. Yellow adds a sense of warmth to any wedding color palette. Along with orange, brides typically choose to add this color during the summer and fall months.

Green: Brides, who choose green as part of their wedding colors, might have a connection to nature. Green adds a clean, fresh color to the wedding palette. This color tends to represent someone who is responsible and refined.

Brown: This color represents comfort and honesty. Brides who choose brown might want to add a neutral color to their wedding color palette. Rich chocolate brown can add a dramatic effect while tan can add a modest effect.

Blue: A bride, who chooses blue as part of her wedding palette, might be compassionate and calm. Like pink, the feeling of blue can greatly depend on the hue of blue chosen by the bride. Teal creates a more fun, bold environment while midnight blue creates a sense of sophistication similar to black.

I was perusing my emails today and there was an orange blossom in one of them.  Looking at it made me dream of warm spring days, fresh air with the wafting scent of orange blossoms, drinking crisp wine with friends as our kids ran around.  Such an idyllic daydream, no?  When I came out of my reverie, I thought that the orange blossom would be a good inspiration for a wedding theme and got to working on these two inspiration boards.  What say you?  Any comments, additions, suggestions, or even your own orange blossom inspiration board to share?

Real Weddings Chaslyn & Jason Circle City Planners

The designers and planners at Circle City Planners Weekenders division are a talented lot to be sure.  Circle City Planners’ weddings are often glamorous and high-end. Chaslyn & Jason’s wedding proves that the CCP Weekenders Division delivers on that same discerning taste.  We at YourLifEvents are proud to post this little tasty morsel from Chaslyn & Jason’s wedding.  The colors chosen and the location of the Crowne Plaza Hotel make for an awe-inspiring wedding and reception.

The first wedding of the season for the CCP Weekenders went off without a hitch!  Chaslyn & Jason had a beautiful ceremony in Lafayette with some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard.  Chaslyn looked just gorgeous in her one of a kind dress!  After the ceremony we traveled to downtown Indianapolis to the Historic Union Station & Crowne Plaza Hotel.  The rain fortunately held out for most of the day and Dave Mason from ISPhotographic was able to get some great shots of the happy couple.  As we entered the Grand Ball Room, Chaslyn & Jason were just in awe of how fabulous it looked thanks to my team of Laurenne & Kelly who helped put the finishing touches around the room.  Chaslyn just couldn’t stop looking at all the gold details around the room and commenting on how perfect it looked.  There is nothing like seeing the bride smile!  The evening’s festivities started with an amazing dance by the bride and groom as they were introduced as Mr.  & Mrs. Jason DeVault and ended with what Chaslyn & Jason called the Newlywed Game.

Here are some fun ways this bride & groom personalized their wedding (this is our favorite part):

-  The couple had all things created with trains: menus cards, seating board, and table names with railroad names.  Chaslyn’s father worked for the railroad industry and even had an office in Union Station many years ago when it was up and running.

-  The Newlywed Game was a series of questions the bride and groom were asked by the DJ that had to deal with them and their relationship together.  They were sitting back to back on the dance floor and had to raise a champagne glass if the answer was the bride or a bug mug if the answer was the groom.   So cute!

-  The couple also shared a special dance.  They choreographed a tango to Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance.

-  The bride wore a blue garter that had locket of a picture of the horse she owns, Fly Baby.

-The bride’s dress was handmade just for her in Chicago.

Thanks to everyone that made this wedding come together!
