I just spent a fun and educational weekend at Bloggy Bootcamp in San Francisco.  After the conference, we had a fun time at Club Slide where Igor the Bartender from Russia concocted a special drink called the Siberian Slipper.  One lady described the taste as a watermelon jolly rancher but not as sweet.  I have to disagree with that description, but to each their own.  For me, I could really taste the pear from the pear vodka and another flavor that I couldn’t quite put my finger on…turned out to be Elderberry from the liqueur St. Germain.  Regardless, it was a hit with everyone in attendance and made for a very pretty ‘martini’ drink as well.  Here’s the lo-down on how to make it (sorry, I didn’t get exact measurements, so you’ll have to experiment on your own):

Ingredients:

Pear Vodka (Grey Goose Poire was used in ours)
Juice of 2 wedges of lime
St. Germain

Instructions:

Chill martini glass with ice.  In a cocktail shaker shake the pear vodka and St. Germain.  Empty ice out of martini glass, pour in contents of shaker, squeeze the juice of 2 wedges of lime into martini glass.  Garnish with a lime.

Before hosting your next summer barbeque, inspect your deck to make sure it’s safe and secure for entertaining. Many decks are unsafe and potentially in danger of collapse because they were built incorrectly, have not been properly maintained or are beyond the recommended lifespan of 10-15 years. To help prevent deck collapse events this summer, the Home Safety Council is working with Simpson Strong-Tie to educate families on the importance of inspecting their decks for safety at least once a year. Click here for a checklist of warning signs to be on the lookout for when inspecting your deck

I love to create excitement for my guests when it comes to parties.  I believe that little unexpected surprises adds that little extra touch that makes someone feel special and that they’ve made the right decision to come to your party.  After all, we’re all super busy and it’s never any fun when you’ve decided to go somewhere only to have it be a total drag.  I believe that when you host an event, you should make your guests feel as welcome as possible.  And, yes, I am one of those ‘weirdos’ who leave travel size soaps, candles, fresh flowers and sometimes even candies in our guest room when someone is staying – I just believe that it’s important to make someone feel important, comfortable and special.

So, for part 3 of my (40th) birthday party planning series, I am sharing with you what I found to leave as little surprises for my guests.  For those of you who haven’t read the other posts, we are renting a retro kitchy B&B for the weekend called Palm Springs Rendezvous which has a great 50′s vibe.  I created and sent out 50′s themed surprises via the mail, and now I want to make sure that when my guests arrive, there are some fun little surprises in their rooms too.  Knowing that we are going to drink (a lot), I decided to put a little munchy and a thirst quencher in the rooms for each guest, but wanted to keep it in that retro theme.  Take a looksy at the perfect pairing I found – so excited!

Stirrings Cocktail Sodas that come in a variety of flavors including Pink Grapefruit, Ginger Ale, Tart Cranberry & more.

Retro Popcorn minis from Just Pop In in an amazing array of flavors.  Even the odd-sounding flavors are delicious – cinnamon popcorn?  check; Orange flavored?  check.  Fresh and delicious, retro and different – check!  I can’t wait to taste all the different flavors we ordered.

To continue with my little series on the planning of my 40th birthday party, part 2 consists of a little surprise I sent via mail to my guests.  With the party being held at a B&B in Palm Springs, we had to first receive commitments from those who could come, thus requiring me to send out Evite invitatations initially.  However, this is going to be a special party with special little surprises and therefore, wanted to make sure I had something to get those committed guests in the right party mood.  The B&B we rented is a retro kitchy B&B called the Palm Springs Rendezvous with a cool 1950′s vibe.  In that vain, I created an ‘itinerary’ for the guests and printed it out with a 50′s retro theme.  I found cd’s that look like small vinyl records and my husband burned some great 50′s crooners music for everyone to listen to on the way up.  I then bought some retro gum – Beechums and Clove and packaged it all in a box that I wrapped with aqua retro wrapping paper and a pretty red bow and sticker and sent it off to each guest.  Here are some pictures of the final product:

Mai Tai CocktailWell, my 40th birthday is just around the corner which means that so is my 40th birthday party.  My husband, who is not nearly as passionate about parties as I am, agreed to me planning a big blow-out for my 40th birthday party.  It is, in essence, his gift to me;)

As the days get closer (we’re celebrating August 13-15th), I find myself constantly looking in my planning folder for little things to do - this is how a party planner gets and stays excited about a party you see?

So, here’s the low down:  we’re renting out a small hotel/b&b in palm springs called the Palm Springs Rendezvous, inviting 20 of our friends and having a great party on Saturday night.

This past week, I ordered and picked up the alcohol, but not before deciding on 3, yes 3 signature cocktails:  Black Cherry Lemonade, The Classic Mai Tai and a Tequila Cosmo Martini.  Here are the deelicious details:

As I’ve said before (ad nauseum) our neighborhood is very social.  We are often in our front yards talking and letting our kids play – it was a main reason we chose where we live.  In that same vain, it was important for me that we buy a house with a front porch, I just love the idea of sipping wine/lemonade/insert drink here on the front porch, enjoying the day and being social with my neighbors.

While most people entertain in their backyards, we have recently undergone a major re-landscaping of our front yard with entertaining in mind.

We decided to create a low-water maintenance yard, but also something kinda Tuscan yet that lends itself nicely to our craftsman home.  My husband, who sadly has been ‘put on the injured list’ for soccer has filled his time with massive amounts of research to grow wine vines.  Our new and improved front yard now boasts a mini ‘urban vineyard’ (that MAY produce wine in about 5 years), a little stone patio where as soon as we put a table and chairs will provide a lovely seating area for us and our friends and neighbors, a mini meandering pathway (aka, the mini bike track for the kids), and low fence – again a seating area for us and our neighbors (aka, a barrier from doggies pooping).  Here are some pictures of our new Front Yard Entertainment area – I can’t wait to host a mini get together and celebrate summer.

summer bbq Pictures, Images and Photos  Summer BBQ

My husband loves his bbq, he bought it from Australia or some such place before we were married.  It’s a flat top bbq which is really kinda cool, but now that we have a child, it makes me nervous as *&$#(* everytime our son runs within 2 feet of it while it’s on.  Now that summer is here, the barbecue will be used more and we will all be playing outside a lot more too, so I thought it best that we ‘bone up’ on our bbq safety tips.  I found the following tips from the Home Safety Council:

Barbeque season is here and there’s nothing better than gathering with the ones you love to enjoy your favorite grilled foods. Make sure your summer barbeque doesn’t go up in flames by taking time to brush up on your grilling safety skills. Move your grill at least 10 feet from all other objects, including your home and any shrubs or bushes before lighting it. Click here for more grilling safety tips from the Home Safety Council.

One of the many things I love about our neighborhood is that we all know each other and often get together on a whim to drink wine, bbq and watch our kids play together.  In a big city such as ours, especially a fairly urban area (we live 5 minutes from downtown), this type of neighborly camraderie is often only seen in movies and t.v.  No doubt, we are lucky.  Our neighborhood is quite simply – retro.  Filled with craftsman and spanish houses dating back to the 1920′s and 1930′s, as well as many local markets, restaraunts and stores, our neighborhood is undergoing gentrification.  Personally, I believe it’s because no one has a garage they can just drive into and run into their home without saying hello to a single person.  Most of us have the original carriage house from the 1920′s (not exactly the size of cars these days) and therefore, we park in our driveways and actually see and talk to our neighbors.  While the neighborhood association throws a large block party down our main street, many of us on our block have thought about throwing a small one for us.  Many of us have children who are around the same age and as we chase our kids down the street we’re getting to know each other even better.  So, let’s see what it would take for us to throw a block party (this list should fit for all/most neighborhoods):

  1. Make It Legal:  No, you can’t just throw up some barricades and decide that your street is closed;)  However, once you’ve cleared the idea with a certain amount of neighbors (most cities have a required number – usually everyone must sign off), it is fairly easy to find block party permits online in most cities.  Simply type the following into your Google search engine “[name of City] block party permit”.  Here is the link to San Diego’s Block Party Permit Application.
  2. Ask For Help:  Regardless of how ‘laid back’ you want your block party to be, there are still a number of particulars that you won’t want to take on all by yourself.  Gather a group of people who are willing to do various tasks – getting other neighbors to sign the petition and/or donate money towards the event, someone to rent/transport the barricades, someone willing to talk to the Fire and Police Department if you want a truck or car to come for the kids, someone to be in charge of kids activities, etc.
  3. Get Organized:  We love Evite!  This type of party is perfect for sending out informal email invitations.  The best part is you can request people to sign up for what food they’re going to bring to the block party making organization and communication even easier.  Next, create a spreadsheet of who is doing what and when.
  4. Be Creative:  This is a family event, so be creative and get your kids involved with some fun activities like having them paint the block party banner the day of the party.  It’s okay that it won’t be hung up right away, the fun part is in the making of it.  Have a station set up for kids’ crafts like making party hats, costume dress up, side-walk chalk, ice cream sundae station (this one is for adults too), bean bag toss – you can create a carnival style atmosphere just by putting tables end to end and setting up a blow up pool in the middle with floaties creating a coin toss.
  5. The Logistical (i.e. Not-So Fun) Stuff:  Often overlooked items when planning a party are the logistical ones – remember to set out trash and recycle cans throughout the length of the block so trash doesn’t end up in people’s yards.  Decide ahead of time if each household will bring their own plates, utensils, etc. or if someone will be donating them for everyone.  Decide where on the block the majority of the party will be held – set-up music & food in that location with activites and crafts on either end in order to get everyone mingling in a central location.  If you’re going to need electricity for anything (bouncy house, etc.) be sure to find a neighbor willing to ‘donate’ the use of their electricity.  Check the weather – be prepared to take it inside – you may have to do a progressive party from house to house.
  6. Decorate:  A block party needn’t be over-the-top.  Stick with fun and easy decor like balloons, cardboard signs made by the kids, cover the tables with butcher paper and have the kids draw on them (easy clean-up too).  Have the kids cut triangles out of construction paper and decorate them to create cute pennants.  Punch holes in them and string them along the pop-up tents.  Ask the kids to pick wild flowers in people’s gardens (who have given permission) to place in mason jars or clear cups as floral decor for the tables.
  7. Feast on Food:  Potluck style is easiest, but there are some variations on the potluck.  Between the cost of meat and the various dietary restrictions, it is best to either have the guests cook and bring their own entree along with a side-dish, or have someone available as the ‘BBQ’er’ who can bbq the meat that everyone brings.  In either case, everyone brings their entree and a side dish/salad/dessert to share.  If you’re lucky enough to have someone on your block willing to buy and prepare all the meat then GO FOR IT!
  8. Sip on Drinks:  When it comes to alcohol we suggest one of two options, (1) have each house have their own cooler of alcohol to share that is supervised by an adult, or (2) have a specific area (like a beer garden only you can leave) where adults bring all the alcohol and someone is designated to supervise the area (central location is best).  To keep the kids hydrated (and minimize waste) we suggest asking everyone to bring their own re-usable bottle and have sun tea containers filled with water, ice tea, fruit drinks, etc.  Obviously, soda is an easy option to throw into non-alcoholic ice buckets too.

A block party is such a great way to get to know your neighbors, run the kids ragged (hee hee), and a great excuse to get outside and enjoy the warm summer weather.  You never know who you may meet and what new and exciting adventures await you;)

Pop-Open Popcorn Tubs - 10 CountIf  you are having a birthday party or slumber party for a child or even having an anniversary party for an adult – why not throw a retro movie night party?  These popcorn box favors will be a box office hit.

Recently I had a 60th birthday celebration with my girlfriends at the Glen Ivy Hot Springs and Spa, what a blast!

Although it wasn’t a movie night celebration per se, after our spa day, we went to a nice hotel, jumped into our p.j.’s , put on a movie and noshed on the party favors I had created.  Yum-m-m, they really were a big hit!

Here are a few places on Amazon that are selling popcorn boxes:  Popcorn Boxes by Century Novelty, Popcorn Scoop Boxes, Pop-Open Popcorn Tubs.

There are many styles, so look around for just the right look for your party.  I  put a bag of pop corn and a bag filled with candy inside the box, surrounded by raffia. For a personal touch I made the paper flower DIY project from April, and wrote a special note for each guest tied to the yarn around the flower. Instructions for how I used the flower as a tie for the top of the bag are below.  OH, and don’t forget the great DIY “Queen For The Day” chair cover.  If you really want to make someone feel special…make this for the honored guest.

Popcorn BoxesPopcorn Boxes (8 count)Hollywood Party Accessories - Small Popcorn BoxesSmall Open-top Popcorn Boxes (Case of 500) by Snappy Popcorn Co, Inc.

Here’s what you’ll need to make your boxes festive

  • Raffia, colored
  • Plastic party favor bags
  • Yarn
  • Buttons, (a loop back makes it easier for the yarn to go through)
  • Flower pictures from a magazine
  • Candy bars (I used retro candy bars) gum, a bag of un-poped pop corn & cookies
  • 1950's Nostalgic Candy Mix: 1 Count
  • Colored paper, for tags
  • Colored pen
  • Scissors  (scrapbook scissors, optional)
  • Hole punch
  1. Place raffia in first then the bag of pop corn, pulling the raffia up around it, it can spill out the top a bit.
  2. Fill the plastic bag with all your yummy goodies, leaving enough room to tie off the bag at the top.
  3. Cut your yarn to 12″. (See instructions for making the paper flowers.) Punch a hole in the center of the paper flower, thread the yarn into the hole, threw the button, then back threw the flower hole.
  4. Tie your bag closed. Punch a hole into one end of your tag, write your message or persons name on it. Thread the yarn threw the hole and tie it to the thread around the flower.
  5. Tip: You can also use scrapbook scissors to cut the tags out and give them a pretty edge.

As usual, Etsy finders have made me happy.  Today’s Etsy finds (found by Etsy Finder Heather) will you put you on your block’s party map.  They had me at the Citrus Slip-on Coasters!  How super cute and original are those?  The problem with finding all this great party fare is I don’t think I have enough free weekends in summer to throw all the parties I would want to throw (nor that cash, but that’s another matter), so I’m stuck dreaming up one great party after another using these Etsy finds as inspiration.

Vintage cooloer, vintage purple glasses, vintage stirrers and all the other cool vintage fare for my (imaginary) retro cool summer party; Citrus Slip-on Coasters, summer paper lanterns, party summer umbrellas for my (again imaginary) ultra-hot summer cocktail party; Toy Wood Boat for a sailing themed kids party; DIY Poolside Party Shades for my (yes, yes imaginary – especially since we don’t have a pool) Wet N’ Wild Pool Party; Lanterns for Nostalgic Lighting for my garden themed wedding (totally imaginary since I’m already married – hee hee); and so so so much more.  Not sure where I would store it all, but I know I could use it all for all sorts of fantastically great parties;)

Okay, and one shameless plug for own cute little Etsy item – our summer bbq Parent & Child Apron (perfect for a Father’s Day Gift) , would be such a cute apron to wear when bbq’ing at your next summer party.

Keeping your kids busy this summer.

As you are going through all your closets, drawers, and cupboards, don’t forget to set aside a pile of recycling for the kids.    Think cardboard boxes to use for making all sorts of fun and imaginative things – box robots and creative lemonade stands, kids very own mailboxes, funny masks, decorated frames, bag hats, mobiles and wind chimes, wine cork trivets and CD case mosaics to name just a few.  There are some good books that can give you and the kids ideas on what to make. Here are two that we suggest:

Remember Fathers’ Day is right around the corner so get your kids busy making great and cherished Fathers’ Day gifts.

Host a recycle party and invite the neighborhood kids over.  Have each child bring over a shoebox of recycled items. Put tables outside with the piles of recycled items down the center of the table and place glue, punches, stickers, pom poms, chenille stems, jewels and beads, yarn etc. on both ends of the table and let the kids go wild!

DIY TIP: Make invitations for your recycle party out of recycled cards or magazines. Cut up letters and pictures and make your own invite. Some stores end up with left over envelopes from their cards and just throw them away.  See if they have any left overs, you can take off their hands.

For things that don’t get used and need to be recycled, here is a great list from Real Simple Magazine, the most complete list I have ever seen and one you will want to keep on hand, of tips on how to recycle or reuse anything. And it’s a good education on what happens to some of your unwanted items.

Enjoy your summer, keep the kids busy, happy and using their creative imagination. If you take pictures of your group we would love to see and post them, to see what those creative minds have come up with.

Having a tea or coffee get together with your girlfriends is so much fun and making special place mats for your party makes it even more special. These are quick and easy and not expensive to make, but will leave a great impression.  Tea party favors are plenty and beau coup is one of our favorite places to get favors. And if you are having your coffee party outside near a fire pit or in the winter these Java Logs by Pine Mountain are just the thing for you!  If you really want to WOW your guests take a look at Coffee Art by Angel & Andy to see if you can create a coffee masterpiece yourself.

HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • Canvas or Light colored recycled place mats
  • Compressed sponge
  • Iron on decals
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Brushes
  • Black permanent pen
  • Scissors

HERE’S HOW TO MAKE IT

  1. Cut your sponge while it is still compressed, into  1″ x 1″ squares. Cut 1 for each color of square you are making.
  2. Place the square sponges in some water and wait until they expand. Squeeze them out.
  3. Iron on decals to place mat or draw your cup and flowers to top and outline with the black permanent pen.
  4. Paint in the decals or drawings. Write Java or Tea Time under cup with permanent black pen.
  5. Pounce the square sponges into the paint, tap off some of the paint and going around the bottom of the place mat, pounce each square alternating colors, next to each other with the edges touching each other. See example.
  6. Let dry and with your permanent black pen, draw squiggle lines on 2 sides of the squares and in between the two colored squares.

DIY TIP: Check out your local second hand shop for place mates and you can always dye them if they aren’t the color you wanted.

Entertaining…Create an environment where your guests can entertain themselves, so you can enjoy the party too!

Whether you are going away or staying close to home for Memorial Day, pulling out the good old games from yesteryear and sitting around your firepit with family and friends is always a great way to celebrate get-togethers.  Here are some fun ideas, remakes of old games and fun things to do, for kids and adults alike. And if you are having a BBQ, don’t forget our fun DIY apron you can whip up in an hour or so!

In the 1300′s croquet was seen on almost every lawn that was big enough to set it up. Eddy Bauer’s croquet set at Target is reasonable enough to again have as a regular lawn game. Dominoes is another favorite and an easy game to keep the kids busy. LLBean has some great lawn darts, lawn bowling and wood dominoes , that are easy to read, including a nice wood case, that will bring back memories for sure. Here’s something my son played with for hours as a child, that may be new to you -  “Bill Ding”, wood cut out clowns, stacking game.  My son stacked them all different ways and counted how many he could stack each time. You’ve got to check these out. And here’s a new one with an old feel, “Camp” it’s an outdoor themed competitive learning game.

Here is something fun to do around the camp fire, roast Peeps candies! And there are more than just chicks. There are trees and bunnies in all different colors. They are just a marshmallow, but this makes them much more fun to roast!

DIY TIP- To make it even more fun, whittle the ends of some tree branches to a point, stick the marshmallows on the ends, wrap them in plastic wrap, and tie a raffia bow around bottom. Place all the tree sticks in a ceramic pot filled with sand, and place moss over the sand. Now you’re all ready to hand out those tree peeps for roasting.  Just make sure to gather tree sticks that aren’t poisonous – know the tree type and do your research, we don’t want your family getting sick or worse because you accidentally gathered branches from a toxic plant.  Here is a link to the most common toxic and non-toxic plants.  Better yet, just use large skewers meant for grilling;)

*_________________________________________________________________________________________*

Fun straws at Party City in old fashion bottled sodas are always a hit, get the sturdy paper ones with strips or go wild with many others like these umbrella straws.

DIY TIP – If you want to make it easy for your guests to keep track of their drinks, cut out circles (.50 size) from the paper plates you are using, write your guests name on them,  place the straw on the back and  put a sticker on the back across the straw and onto the paper circle, to hold your name plate in place.

And a BBQ isn’t complete without good old fashion homemade ice cream and this is the fastest way I have seen to make it, along with lots of fun! Pick up this unique ice cream maker from LLBean.

  • Add ingredients to one end, and rock salt and ice to the other, you can even add flavors
  • Shake, pass or roll the ball and in 20 minutes you’ll have a pint of ice cream

DIY TIP- Since these balls need to be juggled to make the ice cream, why not make a game out of it and toss the balls around in a circle of kids. You will have ice cream in no time!

Not too long ago we featured a Queen for a Day chaircover for mothers’ day and it got me thinking…my daughter’s 40th birthday is coming up and she will be going away with her husband and close friends to celebrate.  So, I wanted to make something she could take with her to let her know we are celebrating with her in spirit and to have something that would make her feel special on her big day.  The chaircover was the perfect solution.  I am also thinking of making a “King for the Day”, for Fathers’ Day and maybe a special one for birthdays, and of course, we can’t leave out our newly engaged couples – Queen for a Day and King for a Day chaircovers for baby showers, bridal showers and engagement parties - what a fun tradition to start.  Just like everyone has their own stockings for Christmas, everyone can have their own special chaircover for their big day, whatever it is.  So here is my spin on the mothers’ day chaircover we posted in May that used a pillowcase as the base for the chaircover.

“Made for a Queen (or a King)”, Celebration Chaircover

HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • 1 yd. fabric* (or 1 pillow case)
  • 1/2 yd. trim fabric*
  • 1/2 yd. white fabric
  • Thread
  • Transfer crown pattern
  • Jewel’s, sequins or charms
  • Scissors or Rotary cutter*
  • Fabric pens, permanent markers*
  • Fabric glue
  • Ruler
  • Tape
  • Iron

Chair backs are all different sizes, this cover should fit most all chairs as it is a bit longer than the average chair. If you want to make it to fit a particular chair, measure the back of the chair first and adjust the fabric length accordingly.

HERE’S HOW TO MAKE IT

  1. Cut 2- 20″ x 26″ pieces of fabric for body of cover.  Cut 2- 3″ x 28″ & 3″ x 27″ strips of boarder fabric.  Cut 2- 12″ x 1 1/2″ & 2- 13″ x 1 1/2″ & 1-3″ x 20″ strips for crown boarder. Cut 1- 10″ x 13″ of white fabric for crown transfer.
  2. Print out and tape down crown pattern to a table. Center 10″ x 13″ white square of fabric over pattern and tape down to hold in place while tracing crown pattern with black markers.
  3. Decorate crown to your liking. You can use different colored permanent markers to outline the inside lines of the crown as I did, use a stencil to trace the letters in the crown and glue on embellishments. Glue on embellishments last, so they don’t get in the way while you are sewing.
  4. Pin right sides together and sew the 12″ x 1 1/2″ & 13″ x 1 1/2″ trim pieces around white crown fabric.
  5. Iron & fold over so there is a 1/2″ boarder on both sides.
  6. Pin and sew crown square to 1 ply of fabric, 6″ down from the top and 3″ in from the sides.
  7. Pin and sew strips of boarder fabric, right sides together, to back piece of  20″ x 26″ piece of fabric. Fold up and iron bottom strip and sew. Finished boarder should be 1″ wide.  Top stitch edge of boarder.
  8. Pin and sew the other bottom boarder strip to the remaining 20″ x 26″ piece of fabric, same way as above.
  9. Fold over and iron all edges of boarder fabric.
  10. Lay crown top fabric onto back, matching up all sides, wrong sides together. Fold over, Iron and pin boarder to front panel. Finished boarder should be 1″ wide. Top stitch boarder on all 3 sides. Finished size 21″ x 27″.
  11. Place a piece of card board or magazine inside and under the crown fabric square and glue on your embellishment to crown. Let dry.

We created these ‘au naturel’ escort card holders for a wedding with a very craftsman feel.  We used chocolate brown and green to match the wedding colors, but you can match and personalize these to your own wedding or event.

If you are interested in purchasing these escort card holders, you can visit YourLifEvents Etsy store.  We have a variety of styles and themes including vineyard, garden, fall, shabby chic, contemporary and are willing to customize the design to fit your wedding style.  You can click here to go directly to item listing.

Otherwise, read on to learn how to make your own:

Items Needed:

  • 2×4 pieces of wood cut to 12″ in length
  • Miter Saw to cut the slots in the wood (or a friend who has one.  Sometimes the guys at home depot can do this for you too…sometimes)
  • Wood Stain
  • Foam Brush
  • Latex gloves
  • Moss
  • Glue Gun
  • Ribbon

How To Make:

  1. Cut the 2×4′s to be 12 inches in length.
  2. Lightly sand each board.  Stain each board on 3 sides, let dry.  Stain final side, let dry.
  3. Measure slots to be 1″ apart (you should be able to fit 12 slots/cards on your board).  I would stain first because you don’t want any stain dripping into the slots.
  4. Use the miter saw in accordance with safe practices to cut each measured slot in the wood.
  5. Wrap moss around edges using glue gun as you go around.  Tie a ribbon around moss edge to help secure in place.

Lanterns just seem to be everywhere this spring! I love outdoor weddings, picnics, birthday parties, charitable events, etc. out in the warm night air.  Lanterns lend themselves to these and so many other gatherings.

Here are a few quick tips for using lanterns in your party decor:  Place lanterns in a group. Stick with an odd numbers of lanterns. Add bamboo stalks and place them in a tall pot for a large decorative accessory. Decorating with bamboo throughout your space gives your area continuity and compliments the lanterns.

I’ve put together a collection of places where you can find beautiful, different, whimsical and colorful lanterns.

Frontgate, is one of my favorite catalogs,  I could buy something off every page, including their beautiful renaissance lanterns.

The glow of Moonlight Solar Lanterns from “Garden Basket”, is not only a great green option, but the silk effects that come in different shapes and sizes in the shimmery metallics are over the top, and of course they also come in beautiful bright colors.

Then there are glass & metal lanterns from Outer Banks Trading Group, bamboo from Jason Home and Garden tin from Z GAllery,  handwoven natural arurong from Frontgate… so many different types that we couldn’t possibly put all that I found. So here are a just a sprinkling of what is out there to make your party sparkle and make the night come alive with a glow.

Cupcakes are special dessert treats that have been around since the early 19th century.  It is logical to realize that the origin of the cupcake was actually a cake, but who would have thought the cupcake would come so far and become so popular.  History shows that cupcakes really came about due to practicality.  Measuring tools for cupcakes were simply the more practical manner in which to bake.  Cupcakes were first made in muffin tins and now they can be made in cupcake tins that have special shapes like hearts, stars, and so many more options!  In fact, much of what was eaten when cupcakes were first invented was created in smaller portions.  Portions today are sometimes actually two or three times what a single portion once was.  For some reason as time has gone by, we have continued to super-size everything, including cupcakes (but let’s face it, that’s a wonderful thing isn’t it?).

Cupcakes are SO popular these days and since I love making cupcakes, I’m always on the lookout for new and unique ways to bake and decorate them. These new finds are going to take me to a totally new level of baking!  And some of the toppers and kits that are available are just plain funtastic. Take a look at these great finds for the week.

There are SO many pretty cups for cupcakes at “Bake it Pretty” you will have a hard time choosing which to buy.  They have a lot more than just cupcake items too.  The pictures above are just a sprinkling of some of their funtabulous baking paraphenalia.  Since we are so close to Mothers Day, I just had to put the a few ‘Mum’ items in too.  Check this great place out yourself, you won’t be disappointed.  Enjoy!
