We are new parents, so having never done any of this before, we tread lightly and research everything.

Our 2 1/2 year old son starts part-time pre-school on Tuesday. It seems so young. When he was born, my mind was set that he would start pre-school around 4 years old. I think that’s a normal age???  But, we decided it would be so great if our son could be in a French immersion school, which it turns out is easier the earlier you start (especially if, like us, you don’t speak the 2nd language at home) and so we enrolled our son, 2 days per week in French immersion pre-school.

I wasn’t anxious when I had to go back to work and start him part-time with a co-shared nanny. Nor was I anxious when he started full-time at a new (and wonderful) daycare. Why am I anxious now? Is it because the word ‘school’ carries with it so much more meaning?

When I was young, school wasn’t easy for me. We moved around a lot and I was constantly having to make new friends. My studies suffered and I felt less than confident when being called during class.

As I entered my high school years, there was more stability and my grades improved dramatically, but I never forgot those school yard feelings of inadequacy and always felt empathy for those of ‘us’ on the outskirts of all that was deemed popular and cool.

Our son will be entering a school where they only speak French. We do not speak French at home. How will he absorb into this new little community? How many of the other kids have non-French speaking parents at home?  Will I be putting him into a situation where he feels inadequate? Or, because we’ve started him early, will he fit right in and catch on quickly? Are my fears ghosts of feelings past? And, finally, will I cry like a great big baby when I have to leave him in his classroom, walk to my car, go to work and pretend to have put on my big girl panties that morning?

It’s smart to add fruits and veges to your family dinner…It’s easy too!

As a parent, I am always trying to get my child to eat healthy.  Fruits are a tad bit easier than veges, and veges are even difficult for us adults to often work into our meals.

Check out these tips from www.fruitsandveggiesmatter.org on how to add fruits and veges to your family’s meals.

I love sleep – naps, night time, sleeping in…So when our son came along, I was in for a rude awakening – literally!  Every two hours snatched out of a dreamy sleep by a screaming child is not for the faint of heart.  I’ll admit it, it is one of the selfish reasons for us not wanting another child – I just don’t know if I could go through those sleepless nights again (our son did have colic).  There are other less selfish reasons, but that is our selfish one.

Pre-child, however, sleep did not always come easy for me.  I call it the broken record of my mind.  You know how it is when you just can’t turn off your thoughts and they jump randomly from one inocuous thought to the next.  During my twenties, I implemented every possible insomnia cure – no t.v. in the bedroom, no caffeine past 3 p.m., meditation, winding down an hour before bed-time, etc.  And, with diligence (and a great meditation retreat), I was able to quiet that broken record.

With a good night’s rest increasingly losing out to the Internet, e-mail, late-night cable and other distractions of modern life, a growing body of scientific evidence suggests that too little or interrupted sleep may be taking an unappreciated toll on America’s health.

“We’re shifting to a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week society, and as a result we’re increasingly not sleeping like we used to,” reports Najib T. Ayas, a sleep specialist, from the University of British Columbia. While many aspects of sleep remain a mystery, the emerging picture is that not sleeping enough runs counter to the body’s internal clock, throwing a host of basic bodily functions out of sync.

A lack of sleep, (or interrupted sleep) means the body doesn’t have time to complete all of the phases needed for muscle repair, memory consolidation, and the release of hormones regulating growth and appetite. Sleep helps us thrive by contributing to a healthy immune system, as well as better concentration, better decision making and allowing us to fully engage in professional and social activities.

In addition, early reports suggest that the nation’s obesity epidemic is being driven, in part, by a corresponding decrease in the average number of hours American’s are sleeping. According to the Sleep Foundation, Sleep helps regulate the levels of the hormones gherlin and leptin, which play a role in our feelings of hunger and fullness. So when we are sleep deprived, we may feel the need to eat more, which can lead to weight gain.

The National Sleep Foundation goes on to report that approximately 70 million people in the United States are affected by sleep deprivation and about 40 million American’s suffer from a chronic sleep disorder. Sleep deprivation and sleep disorders are estimated to cost Americans over $100 billion annually in lost productivity, medical expenses, sick leave, and property and environmental damage.

The amount of necessary sleep varies from person to person, with some breezing through on just a few hours’ slumber and others barely functioning without a full 10 hours, experts say. But most people apparently need between about seven and nine hours, with studies indicating that an increased risk for disease starts to kick in when people get less than six or seven.

TIPS FOR A BETTER NIGHT’S SLEEP

1.       Maintain a regular bed and wake schedule even on weekends.  According to the National Sleep Foundation, our sleep-wake cycle is regulated by a “circadian clock” in our brain and the body’s need to balance both sleep time and wake. A regular waking time in the mornings strengthens the circadian function and help with sleep onset at night.

2.       Establish a regular, relaxing bedtime routine.  A relaxing, routine activity right before bedtime conducted away from bright lights helps separate your sleep time from activities that can cause excitement, stress or anxiety which can make it more difficult to fall asleep, get sound and deep sleep or remain asleep.

3.       Create a sleep-conducive environment that is dark, quiet, and cool.  Design your sleep environment to establish the conditions you need for sleep – cool, quiet, dark, comfortable and free of interruptions. Consider using blackout curtains, eye shades, ear plugs, “white noise”, humidifiers, and fans to help create a conducive sleep environment.

4.       Exercise regularly.   Studies show that exercising regularly makes it easier to fall asleep and contributes to a sounder sleep. However, try to avoid exercise right before going to bed. In addition, to making us alert, exercise raises body temperature, and a cooler body temp is associated with sleep onset.

5.       Avoid eating, caffeine, nicotine and alcohol close to bed time.  Caffeine and nicotine are stimulants making going to sleep difficult. Caffeine in particular can remain in the body for awhile and should be avoided 6-8 hours before bedtime. People think of alcohol and food as sedatives, but both can actually disrupt sleep causing nighttime awakenings. Consuming alcohol or eating a heavy meal can lead to a night of less restful sleep.

6.       Use the bedroom only for sleep.  It is best to take work material, computer, and televisions out of the sleeping environment. Use your bed only for sleep and intimate moments to strengthen the association between bed and sleep.

If you still have sleep problems use a sleep diary and talk to your doctor. Note the type of sleep problems is affecting your sleep or if you are sleepy when you wish to be awake and alert. Use the sleep diary to discuss with your doctor.

As a Mom/Blogger/Crafter who also has a full-time job (not including the one called “Mom”), I am lucky that our company provides back-up care from Bright Horizons.  But it’s not just something a company has to take care of, you can take a look into back-up care options as well.  From places like Bright Horizons who specialize in regular day care as well as fabulous back-up care options, to online sites such as sittercity.com who have a whole host of babysitters, nannies & more who are ready and willing to work for you AND have often already had background checks run.  We found a wonderful, caring and responsible babysitter on sittercity.com and absolutely love this service!  We’ve actually found two and while they’re both great, one is more often available than the other.  I’ve known friends who have found up to 5 babysitters that they love from sittercity which really gives them peace of mind when they are in need of last minute back-up care for their children.

Being a working parent or having an adult/elderly relative relying on you for care can be stressful. It’s important to take time out for yourself now and then to help you reduce that stress and re-energize.

One thing you don’t need is the added burden of dependent care emergencies. As every parent and caregiver knows, finding care in a pinch can be stressful. When your normal plans fall through, you can end up scrambling. Back-up care has you covered during those stress-inducing last-minute plan changes.

Examples of situations where back-up care comes to the rescue include when:

  • School is out for spring or summer break
  • Your nanny or regular caregiver is ill or on vacation
  • Your child has a mild fever and cannot attend school or their regular child care

program

  • A spouse or adult/elderly family member is recovering from an illness, has surgery or needs assistance
  • You need to work additional hours or your work schedule has unexpectedly changed and your regular care is not available.

Having a back-up care plan in place takes the weight off your shoulders of finding quality care for your loved ones. Reduce your stress. Get your safety net in place today!

Kids need good nutrition to help them stay alert and learn at school.  Fruits and vegetables are a big part of good nutrition.

I’m starting to realize that being a parent is all about living in a constant state of euphoria, absolute fear, wonderment, sadness and complete and total happiness. I am not a religious person per se, but anyone who knows me knows me as a very spiritual person. I talk to God (Goddess, Higher Power) on a daily basis whether via prayer or my inner chatter just needing to tell someone all of these crazy new feelings of thankfulness, happiness and fear. Here is generally how that chatter goes…

I look at my son in amazement and wonder and think, “Wow, you are so cool, I never thought I could love someone so much. Thank you God, thank you so much for letting me be a part of such a wonderful life, thank you for trusting me with one of your children. Please God, please keep him safe. Please don’t make him have to experience the abuse and suffering I had to endure. Please let us keep our jobs and the comforts you have provided to us because we really, really do appreciate them and while I know that we don’t need all these creature comforts that you have provided and we know that so long as we have the love of each other and the desire, we can make it work, we still really would prefer to not have to go through losing these comforts. And, I know that you have more important matters to deal with (war, poverty, strife), but I’ve been led to believe that in your omniscient power, you are able to hear all your children equally and so here I am praying to you that you will keep us healthy, safe and happy, but am adding in some specifics as well. Oh, and again, we are so, so, so thankful for everything you have given”.

It sounds almost desperate doesn’t it? And long. But, this/these thoughts travel through my brain daily, hourly and strangely sometimes by the minute. I travel this thought train from a euphoric feeling of thankfulness and love to an almost debilitating feeling of fear that if I’m not thankful enough, it could all just disappear.

I am still in constant amazement the love that I feel for my child and am often almost brought to tears over this love and feel like this love, if bottled and corked, would just explode. One day while driving home, I was thinking about a family I only know peripherally whose son was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the age of 6 and who passed away last month. This sends me into a tail spin, this thought of losing my son and causes me to [over]think how thankful I am, how much I love my child, how I would emotionally die if anything horrible happened to him and it dawned on me – this must be what it’s like when the proverbial ‘they’ talk about God’s love for us, his children. Now, let me say it again, I am not a religious person – I don’t go to church and have never read the Bible cover to cover. I have always been spiritual, but it was after having a child that this ‘spiritual awareness’ really started to kick in for me. This is when I found myself having conversations with God daily – be it just saying thank you or praying for my friends and family to be helped and kept safe. I find that my eyes and my heart have been opened wider. It is during these times that I wonder, perhaps seeing the light, or going towards the light can happen during our lifetime rather than just after death.

My son literally saved my life (a tumor was discovered) and since his birth, I feel more awake, my heart feels lighter and more open to receive this light. With this awakening, I struggle with the fear – the fear of loss of my son, our jobs, our happiness and then bounce right back to the knowledge that we will be okay…we will be okay so long as our son is okay…we will be okay so long as we stick together and talk…we will be okay so long as I keep this dialogue with God open and so long as I keep my heart and eyes wide open.  And, then I ride that crazy thought train again:)

So, thank you, thank you God, thank you Goddess, thank you to everyone reading and to anyone who feels similarly. Thank you for the peace, the love, the prosperity and abundance that fills my life. I am forever grateful.

Today’s Etsy Treasury consists of fun finds for a Toddler Boy.  As a Mom of a 2-year old boy, it is always fun finding new and original items for a boy.  Sure, there are lots of super cute items for girls, but those are easy to find;)  Today, I am being a little bias and created a treasury of wish list items for the toddler boy.  One of my favorites in this treasury is the Nightmare Before Christmas Beanie – although it was difficult to pick a favorite among so many great (and even practical) ideas.

Take your slimming snacks and create magnificent meals.  Need inspiration?  Here’s one of my favorites:

2 of my favorite slimming snacks are low-fat cottage cheese and avocado.  Both of these are great slimming snack items on their own, but take it up a notch to create a magnificent meal.

Take a dollop of cottage cheese with chunks of fresh avocado and ground pepper then add sliced Balsamic Grilled Chicken breast to the top.  To finish off the meal, create a lovely spring salad.  Whallah!  Slimming Snack turned Magnificent Meal.

Click here to view our quick and easy Balsamic Grill Chicken Recipe.

Remember, avocado may be high in fat, but it’s the good fat (HDL) your body needs – you know, the kind that lowers cholesterol.  Your body needs this type of fat (monounsaturated) for healthy skin, hair, nails, helps decrease belly fat and of course, to help lower the risk of heart disease and regulate blood pressure.  Avocado is actually a fruit, not a vegetable (hence the seed) and is considered one of the world’s healthiest fruit because of its high content of nutrients such as vitamin K, dietary fiber, potassium, folic acid, vitamin B6, vitamin C, and copper.  Additionally, avocados have a reasonable amount of calories and is often used by bodybuilders and nutritionists.

Low-fat cottage cheese is high in protein and low in carbohydrates and fat providing you with a tasty healthy, cheesy alternative to high fat cheeses.  Cottage cheese is a nice option for those on a low carbohydrate diet who are trying to reduce the risk of heart disease.  Cottage cheese is a good source of calcium and vitamin D and therefore it provides a great benefit to your bones, especially in women who lose bone density as they age and enter their menopausal years.

There are many other ways to utilize these two healthy, slimming snacks as meals.  Cottage cheese has been used throughout time with fruit, but take it a step further and get some veges into your diet too.  Add sliced zucchini and squash to your cottage cheese with chunks of tomato and freshly ground pepper.  One of our favorite, albeit odd sounding, ways to use cottage cheese is in place of full fat cheese in a quesadilla.  Yes, it sounds strange, but it is delicious.  Spread the cottage cheese onto a tortilla, add a little cinnamon on top of the cottage cheese (I know, it sounds gross, but it’s really not), roll or fold it up and put in the microwave just long enough for the cheese to melt.  Whallah, a healthier and tasty version of the full fat quesadilla.

Avocados are great when used as fillers in omelettes, sliced or chunked and combined with fruit such as papaya or mango salsa.  Of course, there’s the all time favorite of guacamole, but to keep it healthy, use plain greek yogurt in place of mayonnaise or sour cream.

These are just two of my favorite slimming snacks and how you can turn them into magnificent meals for you and your family.  Start looking at your favorite healthy snacks with a wider open-minded view and you too can probably create some amazing, yummy and healthy slimming magnificent meals of your own.

I love having creative friends.  One of my friends, we’ll call her Amy (because that’s her name) is always surprising me with little cute things she’s made – from her son’s homemade birthday party invitations, to halloween cards to a sweet Spring gift, she has definitely mastered the art of making scrapbooking cool and quaint and sweet without being cheesy, or ‘bad-crafty’.

This month, Amy was invited to a friend’s bridal shower.  These friends of hers are like many couples nowadays who have 2 of everything and just don’t need much in the way of traditional wedding gifts.  While my friend is happy to buy off the registry for the wedding gift, she wanted to give something more personal and from the heart for the bridal shower gift.  And, this is what she created…

Do It Yourself Bridal or Baby Shower Gift

Cute, no?  The bucket consists of a bottle of champagne, some home-made notecards and a basil plant.  For each item, Amy made little cards that say the following:

For the champagne – toast often to everything you are grateful for

For the note cards – love notes are cool

For the basil plant – plant things together and watch them grow

and…for the card that she gave the couple she wrote something to the effect of   ”when life gets busy it’s the little things that are easily forgotten and these are a few things we always try to remember”.

This is a great sentiment for the couple getting married or having a child.  We are often so caught up in the daily grind that we forget what got us to this pivotal point in our relationship.  It is always important to slow down and remember how we fell in love with each other.  If a wonderful hand-made gift like this helps to slow you down and toast to each other, or write a love note or two, then I say it’s the perfect gift a person could receive;)

What about you?  Do you have any ideas of great DIY party or shower gifts?  Have you received that perfect hand-made gift that made you want to get crafting?  How about the bad stuff; anything stick out as just ‘bad crafty’?  We would love to hear your comments.  Until then, Happy Crafting and Have a Fantabulously Eventful Day!

Is it just me or is all Mommies that find themselves just eating the leftovers of what their child eats?  Granted, my son is only 2 years old and while discovering what he likes and doesn’t like (which can change daily), we tend to have a fair amount of leftovers.  It’s amazing how even while happily eating something, he will suddenly exclaim, “I no like it” and be done with what he was just so happy to be eating.  What I’ve come to discover is that my son is a snacker.  Let no ‘real’ food pass those lips – no way.  Just yesterday a peanut butter and jelly sandwich cut in the shape of a whale held his attention for approximately 2 1/4 bites.  I have become quite the snacking connoiseur.  Here are some of our favorites that please both of us especially when having to run out of the house.  *Note* we like to use a quick and easy lunch bag that can hold an ice pack easily.

String Cheese:  I love it more than he does, but it works.  Between the protein and the low in fat and best of all, the ease with which it takes to grab n’go, string cheese is one of my favorites.  According to Ann Marier at Food Editorials.com ’most string cheese in the United States is made from mozzarella, a fresh cheese traditionally made from buffalo’s milk. Because of this, it is an extremely healthy snack food, containing a high percentage of the recommended amount of calcium for individuals. In addition, it is naturally low in calories, so for those who are trying to lose weight, it’s a great snack to have without feeling guilty.’

Almonds.  Most of my snack choices are built around ease and nutrition and almonds are no exception.  Lucky for me (and you) Trader Joe’s sells these little delights raw and packaged in individual snack packs to easily grab n’go.  According to FormerFatGuy.com,   almonds provide high quality, highly absorbable protein and almonds contain six grams of protein per ounce, making them a good source of protein. With a TPD of about 88% and a PDCAAS of about 0.44, almonds offer a highly digestible and quality protein. However, the protein is incomplete so combining almonds with legumes and vegetables is a great way of enjoying a quality plant-based protein along with essential vitamins and minerals such as vitamin E, zinc, manganese, magnesium and calcium.

The other morning, our 2 1/2 year old son discovered the camera just sitting there on the table waiting, nay, begging to be picked up and used.  He obliged said camera and came running to me saying, “Cheeeese Mommy, Say Cheese!” while pointing the lens portion at himself.  My first reaction, of course, was “Please be careful, that is delicate, we don’t want to break it” and I reached to take it…but then stopped myself.  How can he learn to be careful with something if I just take it from him, I thought?

So, we sat down on the sofa together while I tried (ever so hard) to show a 2 1/2 year old the proper ins and outs of working a camera – ‘no point it this way’, ‘oops, you can’t put your finger over the lens’ (as he looks at me quizzically – Lens Mommy?), “um right yes, uh, you can’t cover up the little window right here”, “here is the button you push”…As I started to feel slightly frustred at my 2 1/2 year old not paying attention to me teaching him the proper way to use a camera, I again had to stop and check myself – helloooo 2 1/2 years old you crazy loon.  Kieran was having a great time just doing what we were doing – spending time together learning something new – together.  As far as he was concerned, he was a professional photographer and this is how it is done.

Then came the actual picture taking – I call it ‘A Study In Self-Portraiture’.  While there were some pretty good shots (as in no heads cut-off) of both Mommy and Daddy, alas they are not posted here – it was morning and we were all still in our PJ’s.

When deciding that I wanted to post these pics, I knew I had to figure out a way to tie it into my blog somehow – but HOW?  How do you tie a bunch of silly pics of your son taking his own picture with your camera to ‘celebrating your life’s events’.  Well, for one – our kids are always a celebration of life are they not?  So, there, check-mark.

But, to go one step further, I thought about those little cameras that are often placed on wedding reception tables.  Wouldn’t it be cool to place those out for a kid’s birthday party?  They know it’s a fun adult toy, they’ve seen you using one with glee since they day they were born.  Imagine the funny shots those kids would take?  And, there’s always at least one set of parents who forgets their camera…it’s usually us;)

PhotoToday, I was reading my Mamapedia newsletter and came across a great post written by a Cozi contributing editor.  Cozi is a free online service that we use in our family that provides tools for busy families to manage the chaos of daily life.  One of the many things that we like about Cozi is that we can link the Cozi calendar with our calendars from work.  So, when I put something on the calendar at work that will effect our family time, I simply make a note to have it sync and it will automatically put it on the family calendar – LOVE IT!

The article below was written by a contributing Editor at Cozi and although our son is still too young to be ‘over-calendared’, I was happy to read this point of view and the science behind it.

Busy is Better: Debunking the Over-Scheduled Myth
By Jenny Deam and Romi Lassally

Current wisdom says that flooding kids’ schedules with extracurricular activities like sports practices, music lessons and art classes, may not allow any time for kids to be kids, but are today’s so called “hyper-parents” really doing anything wrong? Determined to provide their children with all of the opportunities their calendars and checkbooks can bear, today’s parents, who just a few years ago were urged to sign their kids up for everything, are now being scolded for doing precisely that. The pace of over-full schedules is damaging American children. Busy is bad…

summer bbq Pictures, Images and Photos  Summer BBQ

My husband loves his bbq, he bought it from Australia or some such place before we were married.  It’s a flat top bbq which is really kinda cool, but now that we have a child, it makes me nervous as *&$#(* everytime our son runs within 2 feet of it while it’s on.  Now that summer is here, the barbecue will be used more and we will all be playing outside a lot more too, so I thought it best that we ‘bone up’ on our bbq safety tips.  I found the following tips from the Home Safety Council:

Barbeque season is here and there’s nothing better than gathering with the ones you love to enjoy your favorite grilled foods. Make sure your summer barbeque doesn’t go up in flames by taking time to brush up on your grilling safety skills. Move your grill at least 10 feet from all other objects, including your home and any shrubs or bushes before lighting it. Click here for more grilling safety tips from the Home Safety Council.

Pop-Open Popcorn Tubs - 10 CountIf  you are having a birthday party or slumber party for a child or even having an anniversary party for an adult – why not throw a retro movie night party?  These popcorn box favors will be a box office hit.

Recently I had a 60th birthday celebration with my girlfriends at the Glen Ivy Hot Springs and Spa, what a blast!

Although it wasn’t a movie night celebration per se, after our spa day, we went to a nice hotel, jumped into our p.j.’s , put on a movie and noshed on the party favors I had created.  Yum-m-m, they really were a big hit!

Here are a few places on Amazon that are selling popcorn boxes:  Popcorn Boxes by Century Novelty, Popcorn Scoop Boxes, Pop-Open Popcorn Tubs.

There are many styles, so look around for just the right look for your party.  I  put a bag of pop corn and a bag filled with candy inside the box, surrounded by raffia. For a personal touch I made the paper flower DIY project from April, and wrote a special note for each guest tied to the yarn around the flower. Instructions for how I used the flower as a tie for the top of the bag are below.  OH, and don’t forget the great DIY “Queen For The Day” chair cover.  If you really want to make someone feel special…make this for the honored guest.

Popcorn BoxesPopcorn Boxes (8 count)Hollywood Party Accessories - Small Popcorn BoxesSmall Open-top Popcorn Boxes (Case of 500) by Snappy Popcorn Co, Inc.

Here’s what you’ll need to make your boxes festive

  • Raffia, colored
  • Plastic party favor bags
  • Yarn
  • Buttons, (a loop back makes it easier for the yarn to go through)
  • Flower pictures from a magazine
  • Candy bars (I used retro candy bars) gum, a bag of un-poped pop corn & cookies
  • 1950's Nostalgic Candy Mix: 1 Count
  • Colored paper, for tags
  • Colored pen
  • Scissors  (scrapbook scissors, optional)
  • Hole punch
  1. Place raffia in first then the bag of pop corn, pulling the raffia up around it, it can spill out the top a bit.
  2. Fill the plastic bag with all your yummy goodies, leaving enough room to tie off the bag at the top.
  3. Cut your yarn to 12″. (See instructions for making the paper flowers.) Punch a hole in the center of the paper flower, thread the yarn into the hole, threw the button, then back threw the flower hole.
  4. Tie your bag closed. Punch a hole into one end of your tag, write your message or persons name on it. Thread the yarn threw the hole and tie it to the thread around the flower.
  5. Tip: You can also use scrapbook scissors to cut the tags out and give them a pretty edge.

As usual, Etsy finders have made me happy.  Today’s Etsy finds (found by Etsy Finder Heather) will you put you on your block’s party map.  They had me at the Citrus Slip-on Coasters!  How super cute and original are those?  The problem with finding all this great party fare is I don’t think I have enough free weekends in summer to throw all the parties I would want to throw (nor that cash, but that’s another matter), so I’m stuck dreaming up one great party after another using these Etsy finds as inspiration.

Vintage cooloer, vintage purple glasses, vintage stirrers and all the other cool vintage fare for my (imaginary) retro cool summer party; Citrus Slip-on Coasters, summer paper lanterns, party summer umbrellas for my (again imaginary) ultra-hot summer cocktail party; Toy Wood Boat for a sailing themed kids party; DIY Poolside Party Shades for my (yes, yes imaginary – especially since we don’t have a pool) Wet N’ Wild Pool Party; Lanterns for Nostalgic Lighting for my garden themed wedding (totally imaginary since I’m already married – hee hee); and so so so much more.  Not sure where I would store it all, but I know I could use it all for all sorts of fantastically great parties;)

Okay, and one shameless plug for own cute little Etsy item – our summer bbq Parent & Child Apron (perfect for a Father’s Day Gift) , would be such a cute apron to wear when bbq’ing at your next summer party.

Kids Playing CatchWith school coming to a close, the usual parent concerns of how to keep the kids busy are on the forefront of each parent’s mind.  To help allay your fears of your ATM card getting squeezed beyond recognition and having to be the taxi driver of endless summer outings, we have a few ideas to help you out.  If you haven’t made a kids activity apron from our DIY project section, this might be the time to check it out.  Or, if you don’t want break out your sewing machine, but do need something to keep the craft spills far away from your children’s clothes, then you can buy a Kids’ Activity Apron from YourLifEvents Etsy store.  Kick off the summer right AND get the kids in the mood for summer fun too.

#1. Here’s a fun way to get your kids to read.

Make a Reading Passport Book.  Include exciting completion stickers or stamps to put in the squares on the individual pages when your child has completed each book in a section.  Your passport pages can be divided into sections of  Adventure, Comedy, Mystery, Suspense, Thriller, Classics, True Epic, Westerns, etc. or, leave them blank and let the kids fill them in.  Kids love stickers and if you get different kinds and don’t let them see what they are, they will look forward to seeing what new and exciting sticker comes next.  Be sure to let them put the stickers in the squares to give them even more sense of accomplishment at the completion of a book.  It’s kind of like those cute painted kid bowls where you want to finish what you’re eating to see the picture under the food.  When all the squares are filled with stickers, the last square can be an actual adventure that you write in and take them on. Even if it’s just to Chucky Cheese, the beach or a fun play center they haven’t been to in a while – what makes it all the more special is that you create the story together and then embark on the adventure together.  Click here to go to our Etsy shop to buy the  DIY project templates.

#2. Fun paper crafts are always fun especially when you use recycled objects.

Enter…the “Mad Hatters Recycled Hat”. It is a brown paper grocery bag turned inside out with the edges rolled down 2 or 3 times, all the way around the bag.  First, you will need to cover a table with newspaper secured with tape.  Down the center of the table you will spread out fun, decorative objects such as Pom Poms, Chenille Stems, feathers, buttons, beads, jewels, wiggly eyes, foam cut outs, stickers, stamps, crayons, markers, ribbon, yarn, a hole punch, glue and/or glue sticks, or anything else you have around that would make for a funny hat.  Use your imagination to help the kids’ imaginations really soar.  Place the un-decorated, pre-rolled hats around the table, then let the kids go wild.  Take pictures at the end, you won’t want to miss this photo opp!  Tell them they must wear their hats to the dinner table as a fun surprise.  You can also have all the kids make these hats at a birthday or slumber party, this is good for at least a few hours of fun!

#3. Backwards Parties.

These parties are always so much fun, and you don’t need a reason to have one.  From putting all your clothes on backwards to eating dinner for breakfast and breakfast for dinner, a backwards party can be as wild as you want it to be.  If you’re sending out invites, make it so they open backwards.  You can even write the “When”, “Where” and “Time” backwards, because people are familiar with how invites are supposed to read and guests will still know what they mean.  Put out name cards but write them backwards and see who can figure out where everyone should sit.   Turn the chairs backwards at the table and have them sit straddling the seat.  This works best with low back chairs so you don’t end up with a mess to clean up because your guests couldn’t get the food to their mouths:) Have the kids try to read something funny backwards and see if they can do it without laughing.  If your party is outside, have the kids try and drink water from the opposite side of the glass.

#4. For the older athletic outdoor types.

A game of  hockey with brooms and dust pans is oh so much fun!  The best place to play this game is down at the school yard, and since school is out you should have the play yard all to yourself.  Everyone borrows their mom’s broom and whoever is going to play the goalie grabs the dust pan.  The puck can be a used and cleaned out tuna can.  You can use duck tape to put down as out of bound zones and goalie areas.  If you have any orange cones to place in the corners, this is a bonus.  Have each team wear a different colored shirt and send them off with snacks and drinks in a cooler. Occupied for hours…

Let us hear what some of your summer fun ideas are to keeping your kids busy, there are never too many good ideas!

Keeping your kids busy this summer.

As you are going through all your closets, drawers, and cupboards, don’t forget to set aside a pile of recycling for the kids.    Think cardboard boxes to use for making all sorts of fun and imaginative things – box robots and creative lemonade stands, kids very own mailboxes, funny masks, decorated frames, bag hats, mobiles and wind chimes, wine cork trivets and CD case mosaics to name just a few.  There are some good books that can give you and the kids ideas on what to make. Here are two that we suggest:

Remember Fathers’ Day is right around the corner so get your kids busy making great and cherished Fathers’ Day gifts.

Host a recycle party and invite the neighborhood kids over.  Have each child bring over a shoebox of recycled items. Put tables outside with the piles of recycled items down the center of the table and place glue, punches, stickers, pom poms, chenille stems, jewels and beads, yarn etc. on both ends of the table and let the kids go wild!

DIY TIP: Make invitations for your recycle party out of recycled cards or magazines. Cut up letters and pictures and make your own invite. Some stores end up with left over envelopes from their cards and just throw them away.  See if they have any left overs, you can take off their hands.

For things that don’t get used and need to be recycled, here is a great list from Real Simple Magazine, the most complete list I have ever seen and one you will want to keep on hand, of tips on how to recycle or reuse anything. And it’s a good education on what happens to some of your unwanted items.

Enjoy your summer, keep the kids busy, happy and using their creative imagination. If you take pictures of your group we would love to see and post them, to see what those creative minds have come up with.

With this one of a kind lunch bag, your kid’s lunch bag will never get mixed up with another kid’s lunch again.  However, remember to put their name in the inside flap, it could be a very sought after item!  Made from Soft Fabric Paint by Tulip and 3-D Fashion Paint, this is an easy print, transfer and paint project. You can even make dinosaur cut out sandwiches with these great crust cutters from Organize.  All you do is make the canvas bag, or you can buy a blank canvas lunch bag with no flap from Dharma Trading and paint the whole image on the bag. Check your local craft stores for Iron On Transfer paper, that will make it easier to transfer your pattern to the canvas.

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE THE BAG

  • 1/4 yd. Canvas or canvas lunch bag
  • 4″ Velcro strip
  • 3-D Fashion Paint by Tulip
  • Soft Fabric paint by Tulip (White, Orange, Blue, Lt. & Dk. Green, Yellow & Black or use permanent fabric pens)
  • Paint brushes

  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Thread

(If using a pre-made canvas bag, start at #8 of the instructions)

HERE’S HOW TO MAKE IT

  1. Cut 2 squares from , 13″ x 9″
  2. Cut 1 strip, 5″ x 35″
  3. Cut 1 square, 6″ x 6″
  4. Fold over tops of the 2 pieces and both ends of strip, 2″, to make a finished hem.
  5. Sew 4″ of Velcro centered to inside tops of bag.
  6. Trace around shape of face onto 6″ x 6″ square. Fold over 3 edges and sew. With wrong sides together, center and sew bottom of face flap  to back of 1, 13″ x 9″ square.

  8. Print out pattern and transfer dinosaur body to front of bag and face to front of flap. If using chalk, trace over the pattern lines with a dark piece of chalk, turn over pattern and draw over the lines with a pencil that you can see through the paper, onto the canvas.

Entertaining…Create an environment where your guests can entertain themselves, so you can enjoy the party too!

Whether you are going away or staying close to home for Memorial Day, pulling out the good old games from yesteryear and sitting around your firepit with family and friends is always a great way to celebrate get-togethers.  Here are some fun ideas, remakes of old games and fun things to do, for kids and adults alike. And if you are having a BBQ, don’t forget our fun DIY apron you can whip up in an hour or so!

In the 1300′s croquet was seen on almost every lawn that was big enough to set it up. Eddy Bauer’s croquet set at Target is reasonable enough to again have as a regular lawn game. Dominoes is another favorite and an easy game to keep the kids busy. LLBean has some great lawn darts, lawn bowling and wood dominoes , that are easy to read, including a nice wood case, that will bring back memories for sure. Here’s something my son played with for hours as a child, that may be new to you -  “Bill Ding”, wood cut out clowns, stacking game.  My son stacked them all different ways and counted how many he could stack each time. You’ve got to check these out. And here’s a new one with an old feel, “Camp” it’s an outdoor themed competitive learning game.

DIY TIP- If you’re playing your games outside and especially if they have small pieces, make a table ledge out of inexpensive wood molding that will frame the top of your table and keep the pieces in its place.

Here is something fun to do around the camp fire, roast Peeps candies! And there are more than just chicks. There are trees and bunnies in all different colors. They are just a marshmallow, but this makes them much more fun to roast!

DIY TIP- To make it even more fun, whittle the ends of some tree branches to a point, stick the marshmallows on the ends, wrap them in plastic wrap, and tie a raffia bow around bottom. Place all the tree sticks in a ceramic pot filled with sand, and place moss over the sand. Now you’re all ready to hand out those tree peeps for roasting.  Just make sure to gather tree sticks that aren’t poisonous – know the tree type and do your research, we don’t want your family getting sick or worse because you accidentally gathered branches from a toxic plant.  Here is a link to the most common toxic and non-toxic plants.  Better yet, just use large skewers meant for grilling;)

Fun straws at Party City in old fashion bottled sodas are always a hit, get the sturdy paper ones with strips or go wild with many others like these umbrella straws.

DIY TIP – If you want to make it easy for your guests to keep track of their drinks, cut out circles (.50 size) from the paper plates you are using, write your guests name on them,  place the straw on the back and  put a sticker on the back across the straw and onto the paper circle, to hold your name plate in place.

And a BBQ isn’t complete without good old fashion homemade ice cream and this is the fastest way I have seen to make it, along with lots of fun! Pick up this unique ice cream maker from LLBean.

  • Add ingredients to one end, and rock salt and ice to the other, you can even add flavors
  • Shake, pass or roll the ball and in 20 minutes you’ll have a pint of ice cream

DIY TIP- Since these balls need to be juggled to make the ice cream, why not make a game out of it and toss the balls around in a circle of kids. You will have ice cream in no time!

If you are making frozen popcicles, think of using these cute “Tilt-A-Whirl baking cup” drip catchers from “Bake it Pretty”. Just make a slit in the cups and push the stick through. The liners made from high-quality Swedish greaseproof paper and keep the mess in the cup !

Well, I hope you all enjoy your Memorial Day Weekend, no matter where or how you celebrate. (<;
