I had a great time and met some amazing people at Bloggy Bootcamp San Francisco in August.  The networking live in person was by far one of the best benefits for those of us who sit behind our computer screens all day.  There was a wonderful mix of newbies and not so newbies and everyone was friendly and helpful to all.  The topics were varied and thorough and Tiffany, our oh so pretty SITS girl coordinator was organized, funny, knowledgeable and approachable.  Oh, and the after party at Club Slide was a nice way to connect with everyone in a casual, fun environment.

To get a nice lo-down of each of the presenters and their topics, be sure to click on the Living La Vida Normal blog below.

Virgin Coconut Oil

 $19.00
Awhile back, I read a fantastic article about organic virgin coconut oil and its numerous benefits and unfortunate negative ad campaign.  Turns out that coconut oil is actually very beneficial to us both inside and out.  Some time back, our country did a big smear campaign on most tropical oils, specifically coconut oil because it is a saturated fat and started touting the hydrogenated polyunsaturated fats (i.e. trans fats) because, let’s face it, it’s cheaper when used in production.

After my own in depth research, I found that coconut oil has an immense amount of wonderful uses for us both on the inside and the outside.  The coolest thing is that coconut oil has a melting point of 76 degrees, which means if you put it on your skin (98 degrees) it melts right away.  And, if you live in Southern California like I do, most of the time, the oil is already liquid in the jar.  Here is how I like to use coconut oil and some of the benefits that go along with it.

1.  On My Skin:  Coconut oil is an excellent massage oil for the skin. It acts as an effective moisturizer on all types of skin especially dry skin and even on acne prone skin.  I often have acne breakouts when skin is too dry and putting a little bit of coconut oil on my face at night before bedtime can greatly reduce my breakouts. The benefit of coconut oil on the skin is comparable to that of mineral oil.  However, unlike mineral oil, there is no chance of having any adverse side effects on the skin with the application of coconut oil. Coconut oil therefore is a safe solution for preventing dryness and flaking of skin. It also delays wrinkles, and sagging of skin which normally become prominent with age. Coconut oil also helps in treating various skin problems including psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and other skin infections. Therefore coconut oil forms the basic ingredient of various body care products such as soaps, lotions, creams, etc., used for skin care.

2.  In or On My Food - Weight Loss & Cholesterol:  Coconut oil is wonderful on toast in place of butter add a little peanut butter and it’s even more amazing.  Also put a little dollop on your baked potato in place of butter.  Weight Loss: Coconut oil is very useful in reducing weight. It contains short and medium-chain fatty acids that help in taking off excessive weight.  As for cholesterol and your heart, there is a misconception that coconut oil is not good for your heart. People believe that because it contains a large quantity of saturated fats, it must be bad for you. However, the opposite is true.  Coconut oil is beneficial for the heart. It contains about 50% lauric acid, which helps in preventing various heart problems including high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. The saturated fats present in coconut oil are not harmful as it happens in the case of vegetables oils. Coconut oil does not increase LDL cholesterol levels (that’s the bad kind of fat). It also reduces the incidence of injury in arteries and therefore helps in preventing atherosclerosis.

3.  On My Hair:  Coconut oil is one of the best natural nutritional conditioners for your hair. It helps in healthy growth of hair providing a shine and brilliance and reducing breakage due to sun or color damage. Regular massage of the head with coconut oil ensures that your scalp is free of dandruff, lice, and lice eggs, even if your scalp is dry. Coconut oil is extensively used in the Indian sub-continent for hair care. It is an excellent conditioner and helps in the re-growth of damaged hair. It also provides the essential proteins required for nourishing damaged hair. It is therefore used as hair care oil and used in manufacturing various conditioners, and dandruff relief creams. Coconut oil is normally applied topically for hair care.  I often use coconut oil on my hair and scalp before bed for a deep conditioner and sometimes I will use just a tiny bit as a styling cream that adds some shine and condition.

These are just a few of the ways in which I utilize the health benefits of coconut oil.  There are a host of other healthy benefits to using coconut oil including digestive, pancreatic, immunity, healing, infections, bones, dental care, etc.  If you would like to read more, you can click here to visit Organic Facts Health Benefits of Coconut Oil.

Today’s Etsy Treasury consists of fun finds for a Toddler Boy.  As a Mom of a 2-year old boy, it is always fun finding new and original items for a boy.  Sure, there are lots of super cute items for girls, but those are easy to find;)  Today, I am being a little bias and created a treasury of wish list items for the toddler boy.  One of my favorites in this treasury is the Nightmare Before Christmas Beanie – although it was difficult to pick a favorite among so many great (and even practical) ideas.

As a woman about to be in her 40′s, I’ve learned that if I’m going to wear lipstick, I really should also apply lipliner in order to avoid that feathery look. You know the one, you see it on old ladies all the time – where their lipstick is seeping strangely into their wrinkles. ICK!

So, the solution to this old lady feathering has always been lip liner, but lip liner is so 2 days ago and done wrong, can make you look older than the feathery lip lady.

So, what’s a ‘not so old’ old lady like me to do? Well, here’s my trick (and it worked nicely when I was in my 20′s too to keep the lipstick from rubbing off):

Find a lip liner that most closely resembles the color of your lipstick or the color of your lips.  Apply it directly on the line of your lips – not over your lips ladies, that is obvious and looks ridiculous!  Then and this is the most important step – rub/smudge it in towards your lips so you no longer have a harsh line.  Now, you can apply your lip gloss or lipstick with confidence.  This is one of my favorite tricks to do when using a clear lipgloss because it gives it a bit more pop without it looking overdone and it stays on a bit better.  Also great for using chapstick.

I love having creative friends.  One of my friends, we’ll call her Amy (because that’s her name) is always surprising me with little cute things she’s made – from her son’s homemade birthday party invitations, to halloween cards to a sweet Spring gift, she has definitely mastered the art of making scrapbooking cool and quaint and sweet without being cheesy, or ‘bad-crafty’.

This month, Amy was invited to a friend’s bridal shower.  These friends of hers are like many couples nowadays who have 2 of everything and just don’t need much in the way of traditional wedding gifts.  While my friend is happy to buy off the registry for the wedding gift, she wanted to give something more personal and from the heart for the bridal shower gift.  And, this is what she created…

Do It Yourself Bridal or Baby Shower Gift

Cute, no?  The bucket consists of a bottle of champagne, some home-made notecards and a basil plant.  For each item, Amy made little cards that say the following:

For the champagne – toast often to everything you are grateful for

For the note cards – love notes are cool

For the basil plant – plant things together and watch them grow

and…for the card that she gave the couple she wrote something to the effect of   ”when life gets busy it’s the little things that are easily forgotten and these are a few things we always try to remember”.

This is a great sentiment for the couple getting married or having a child.  We are often so caught up in the daily grind that we forget what got us to this pivotal point in our relationship.  It is always important to slow down and remember how we fell in love with each other.  If a wonderful hand-made gift like this helps to slow you down and toast to each other, or write a love note or two, then I say it’s the perfect gift a person could receive;)

What about you?  Do you have any ideas of great DIY party or shower gifts?  Have you received that perfect hand-made gift that made you want to get crafting?  How about the bad stuff; anything stick out as just ‘bad crafty’?  We would love to hear your comments.  Until then, Happy Crafting and Have a Fantabulously Eventful Day!

I love to create excitement for my guests when it comes to parties.  I believe that little unexpected surprises adds that little extra touch that makes someone feel special and that they’ve made the right decision to come to your party.  After all, we’re all super busy and it’s never any fun when you’ve decided to go somewhere only to have it be a total drag.  I believe that when you host an event, you should make your guests feel as welcome as possible.  And, yes, I am one of those ‘weirdos’ who leave travel size soaps, candles, fresh flowers and sometimes even candies in our guest room when someone is staying – I just believe that it’s important to make someone feel important, comfortable and special.

So, for part 3 of my (40th) birthday party planning series, I am sharing with you what I found to leave as little surprises for my guests.  For those of you who haven’t read the other posts, we are renting a retro kitchy B&B for the weekend called Palm Springs Rendezvous which has a great 50′s vibe.  I created and sent out 50′s themed surprises via the mail, and now I want to make sure that when my guests arrive, there are some fun little surprises in their rooms too.  Knowing that we are going to drink (a lot), I decided to put a little munchy and a thirst quencher in the rooms for each guest, but wanted to keep it in that retro theme.  Take a looksy at the perfect pairing I found – so excited!

Stirrings Cocktail Sodas that come in a variety of flavors including Pink Grapefruit, Ginger Ale, Tart Cranberry & more.

Retro Popcorn minis from Just Pop In in an amazing array of flavors.  Even the odd-sounding flavors are delicious – cinnamon popcorn?  check; Orange flavored?  check.  Fresh and delicious, retro and different – check!  I can’t wait to taste all the different flavors we ordered.

Now that I am a grandmother, I appreciate and find myself relating more to the things my mom passed onto me when she was living.  She would write down tips in a small notebook that she had read, like a recipe book, and then she would test them.  Here are a few that I will share with you, because we can never learn too much or have too much help.

  • To deodorize shoes, especially those sports shoes that come home and make a child’s room smell like something has died in there. Place a dryer sheet inside each shoe and leave it there over night. They are also good for the gym bag!
  • Out smart the bugs. Mix equal parts of baking soda and sugar, fill jar lids with the solution and place them in the trouble spots where you see roaches and silver fish.  Next day vacuum up the dead bugs.  Be sure to keep the solution out of reach from children.
  • Taming of the hair, that static electricity that is so annoying…quickly run a dryer sheet over your flyaway hair. I wonder if this also would work for static pants…have to try that.
  • Kill the bacteria, even our underarms can get a smelly bacteria build up. Take a cotton ball and put some alcohol or witch hazel on it and rub it in your armpits. Let it dry. Do this before you put your deodorant on.
  • Ok, you have got to love this one. Wet a dryer sheet and rub it on the shower doors and walls to remove mineral deposits and soap scum.
  • How do the microwave ovens get dirty so fast? Someone is not using covers, but there is help. In a 1 quart microwavable bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with 1 cup of water. Zap it in the microwave for 3 minutes. Use a paper towel to wipe off the condensed steam on the walls of the microwave and door. Wipe one more time with a clean damp towel.
  • Before you start sewing, run a needle and the thread through a dryer sheet, it helps keep the thread from tangling.
  • If you wash your own car, make it a bit easier on yourself. Prepare a solution of 1/4 cup baking soda in 1 quart warm water, wait for the baking soda to completely dissolve. Apply to your car with a soft cloth or sponge to remove road grime, tree sap, bugs and tar from car lights, chrome, windows, tires, etc.
  • And last but not least…have a dish that is just caked with baked on food ? Place a dryer sheet in the bottom of the dish, fill it with warm water and let it sit for a few hours. Then it should easily wipe out with a paper towel.

Lanterns just seem to be everywhere this spring! I love outdoor weddings, picnics, birthday parties, charitable events, etc. out in the warm night air.  Lanterns lend themselves to these and so many other gatherings.

Here are a few quick tips for using lanterns in your party decor:  Place lanterns in a group. Stick with an odd numbers of lanterns. Add bamboo stalks and place them in a tall pot for a large decorative accessory. Decorating with bamboo throughout your space gives your area continuity and compliments the lanterns.

I’ve put together a collection of places where you can find beautiful, different, whimsical and colorful lanterns.

Frontgate, is one of my favorite catalogs,  I could buy something off every page, including their beautiful renaissance lanterns.

The glow of Moonlight Solar Lanterns from “Garden Basket”, is not only a great green option, but the silk effects that come in different shapes and sizes in the shimmery metallics are over the top, and of course they also come in beautiful bright colors.

Then there are glass & metal lanterns from Outer Banks Trading Group, bamboo from Jason Home and Garden tin from Z GAllery,  handwoven natural arurong from Frontgate… so many different types that we couldn’t possibly put all that I found. So here are a just a sprinkling of what is out there to make your party sparkle and make the night come alive with a glow.

Cupcakes are special dessert treats that have been around since the early 19th century.  It is logical to realize that the origin of the cupcake was actually a cake, but who would have thought the cupcake would come so far and become so popular.  History shows that cupcakes really came about due to practicality.  Measuring tools for cupcakes were simply the more practical manner in which to bake.  Cupcakes were first made in muffin tins and now they can be made in cupcake tins that have special shapes like hearts, stars, and so many more options!  In fact, much of what was eaten when cupcakes were first invented was created in smaller portions.  Portions today are sometimes actually two or three times what a single portion once was.  For some reason as time has gone by, we have continued to super-size everything, including cupcakes (but let’s face it, that’s a wonderful thing isn’t it?).

Cupcakes are SO popular these days and since I love making cupcakes, I’m always on the lookout for new and unique ways to bake and decorate them. These new finds are going to take me to a totally new level of baking!  And some of the toppers and kits that are available are just plain funtastic. Take a look at these great finds for the week.

There are SO many pretty cups for cupcakes at “Bake it Pretty” you will have a hard time choosing which to buy.  They have a lot more than just cupcake items too.  The pictures above are just a sprinkling of some of their funtabulous baking paraphenalia.  Since we are so close to Mothers Day, I just had to put the a few ‘Mum’ items in too.  Check this great place out yourself, you won’t be disappointed.  Enjoy!

There are great giving back projects that are super easy and give back in a big way. “The 1 Million Pillow Case Challenge” is one of them. I am going to contribute to this cause and will share my pillow cases with you when they are completed. If you belong to a sewing group, get them involved too!

American Patchwork & Quilting is challenging you to join their efforts to Make a Pillowcase, Make a Difference. Every pillowcase can make a difference in your community. A pillowcase can provide comfort for a cancer patient, hope for a foster child, encouragement for a battered woman, or beauty for a nursing home resident. Once your pillowcases are complete and donated locally, (“Rosie’s Calico Cupboard” is one of the donation drop off sites), you log onto the American Patchwork & Quilting  site to enter how many pillowcases you made. Help reach the goal of ONE MILLION Pillowcases. This site even gives you free download pillow case patterns!

If you plan on participating, we would love to hear your pillowcase plans and send in your pictures to us too!

Teacher Appreciation Week begins May 3 and goes through May 7, 2010.  If you’re looking some ideas, read on…

Use Your Imagination!
Over the years of helping out in my kids’ classrooms, I have seen first hand what teachers need and cherish the most. Teachers receive a lot of “teacher” type gifts. Think outside of the box and get them something that they can use and might not normally buy themselves.  An umbrella,  address labels you’ve made on your computer, a new address book, a pair of gloves, or maybe go for something I have listed below. You know your teacher best, talk to her to find out her likes, her hobbies.  Build on something that is personal to him or her.

Create a “Movie Night” Package
Buy a big bowl that can be used for popcorn and put microwave popcorn or the kind you shake over a flame and fill the bowl with drinks, snack items, old fashion soda bottles, flavored salts, and a certificate for a movie rental. This is a great gift idea for male teachers…they can sometimes be hard to buy for!

Supplies for the Classroom
Teachers appreciate getting things that they can use in the classroom. Many times they need supplies for their room because they have to pay for them out of their own pocket. You may want to ask your child’s teacher if he/she has any specific needs. Some ideas are: Art supplies, construction paper, crayons, organizational supplies, stamps and ink pads, high-quality chalkboard chalk, washable markers, “Good Job” stickers for papers, posters, tape, paperclips, glue sticks, red pens, pencils, post-it notes, Kleenex and anything else you can think of that they may use. Put them all together in a big plastic bin with a lid, and tie a big bow around it, because they can more than likely also use a bin !

Add to the Class Library
Teachers love to get books for their classroom. Gather books, see our “Book Nook Recommendations” for some good ones, and then bundle a bunch of them up with a ribbon and a personal note, and maybe even a bag of freshly made cookies tucked under that bow.

Look around your house and I’m sure you’ll find a reusable clear plastic box that can be filled with goodies and made into these cute “Sweet Treats” gift boxes from “Do It Yourself Gifts”!

Fill a container with mixed nuts or candy and decorate the top with circles cut from scrapbook paper. Tie white satin ribbon around the container and tie a floral scrapbook embellishment on the top with embroidery floss.

Plastic Gift Box

For a pre-school or a kindergarten teacher, a small plastic take-out box makes a perfect gift container! Fill it with small cookies or animal cookies and top with circles cut from animal scrapbook paper. A scrapbook button with an embroidery floss bow gives this a crafty feel. What a great way to say “job well done!”

Did you just get married and now you’re loving your new name and want to shout it from the roof tops ? Anything monogrammed is the newlywed favorite!

Here are some unusual and fabulous items that you can get to put your new name on, and feel oh-so-good about it.

The first of my finds is from the cutest site, I could have put 10 items down that would be oh- so- special.  It’s called “Dabney Lee At Home” and their idea for a mouse pad/note pad is genius! OK, I just half to put one more in from this company, so different and while their playing cards are fabulous, (check out the King & Queen cards) they are not for the serious card player but if you are the occasional card players, this is for you.

Then there is “Paper Wink”, you will need new address labels with both your names on them, so why not go with a chic rubber stamp. They last a very long time and it saves on paper, making it very green! You have never seen rubber stamp address labels like this!

OK, this might be my all time favorite…for me it’s like going into a candy store when you were a kid, and I am not alone.  “Felix Doolittle  makes my all-time favorite  stationary”, says Ms. Oprah Winfrey. You must check out every section, you won’t be disappointed. But we will just talk about one area, not to be forgotten. All those boxes of books that you have now moved in and co-mingled in your new place, here’s a way to still keep his and her books identifiable. Book Plates.  From stationary to personalized book plates, you will have a hard time just ordering a few items from Felix Doolittle. And don’t forget your moving announcements… SO darn cute!

Now there are always the more common items, towels, very cute bath soaps and bath robes with your monogram so softly placed above your heart, even monogrammed cup cake holders for birthdays or your first anniversary, but here is something that will definitely stand out, a monogram wall from Palm Gifts .

I just think cake stands are so cute.  I love weddings or showers or birthday party dessert tables that have cake stands displaying the yummy confections in all different shapes and sizes.  There is something so quaint and delicious about them.  In design, we learn to display items at various heights in order to give movement – it is more pleasing to the eye.  Displaying various heights of cake stands like these would be ever so cute at your next get together.  I love these cakestands from Etsy designer, VesselsandWares because you can interchange the ribbon to match the colors of your party – brilliant!  They even carry mini cake stands, cupcake stands and more.  Loving them!  How cute would these be as centerpieces at a baby or wedding shower?

Endangered Species Chocolate Logo

We found this great site, Endangered Species Chocolate (ESC) that was founded in 1993 in effort to spread awareness and to make an impact on the growing number of plant and animal species that are disappearing from Earth. Since then the mission has grown to embrace a new definition of “endangered” – that all species, habitat and humanity are endangered on our planet, not just animals on a list. 10 percent of the net profits are donated to help support species, habitat and humanity.

Endangered Species Chocolate is 100% Ethically Traded. They buy its cacao from small family-owned properties, helping sustain the habitats and communities in which they exist.  They only buy cacao grown in the natural shade of rich, diverse forests. Choosing their chocolate is one way you can help support sustainable forest farmland and the species that flourish there. Since it is ethically traded, ESC ensures farmers humane working conditions and a fair price for their cacao.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of any better way to celebrate our precious Earth on Earth Day and beyond than eating chocolate.

Visit Endangered Species Chocolate to learn more and order your chocolate!

Also, if you’re getting married and looking for eco-friendly chocolate favors, look no further.  Here’s a quick post from ESC’s blog:

That’s right if you’ve got a Spring or Summer wedding coming-up you want to check-out our website for some yummy all-natural and organic wedding favors.  Available in a variety of flavors and sizes, our wedding favors will be sure to keep your guests happy through-out your reception.

You can also order them with eco-friendly pouches made from biodegradable material.  So if you want to make your guests happy and be a ‘green bride’ our wedding favors are for you.

Earth Day PosterWhat will you be doing to celebrate and support Earth Day? My son and I will be putting together a compost bin and garden boxes. Not only will we be producing excellent fertilizer for my garden box and flowers,  we are also reducing the amount of food and yard waste that ends up in landfills.

My fabulous find…a garden box kit from Lowes.  I hope to build some more garden boxes with the “Suncast Tiered Raised Garden Bed”, that you can buy now at Lowe’s. I also got my easy turn, composter there, and it looks so simple to put together.  But the first thing I did was get a small tin container with a lid from the Container Store to put under my sink for my table scraps. My container is almost full, so I must get my composter put together this weekend, weather permitting.  Boy the scraps sure pile up fast and it makes me see how much we were giving to the landfill instead of nourishing my own garden!

If you want to build your own composter with wood, I suggest using boards that are untreated, but they will only last a couple of years.  In that case, it may be better to look into one of the synthetic raised bed garden kits, they last longer and can be assembled in an afternoon.  However, speaking of Earth Day, we may want to research the environmental impact these have before purchasing???

The secret to successful raised-bed gardening is creating beds that are wide enough to reach across; paths between beds are wide enough to accommodate a wheelbarrow or garden cart, so that you can add compost to the beds over time; and enough garden beds to have a variety of plants and herbs for the number of people in you’re family.

Think about what you too can do for the earth, on April 22nd, Earth Day.
