GoodOnYa Bar Sample Pack

 $10.00

Today, we are promoting one of our favorite lunchbox items, the GoodOnYa Bar.  It’s funny because I actually used to work next door to GoodOnYa Cafe in Sorrento Valley and was always a fan of all of their nutritious food.  When they came out with their GoodOnYa Bar, I was very excited and not disappointed at all.  It’s tasty and good for me?  How could it be?

The Lunch Box provides schools with free, tangible tools to transform school lunch from highly processed foods to made-from-scratch meals using nutritious, fresh ingredients. It contains tools for real change including school-tested recipes with nutritionals and training tips, financial modeling guides, budget templates, downloadable, customizable calendars, and training videos.

The Lunch Box Project’s goal is to raise $20,000Together we can change the way we feed our kids.

If you purchase the GoodOnYa Sample Pack (Click Here to Buy) before September 7, 2010, OpenSky will donate $1.00 to the Lunchbox Project for every sample pack sold.  As an added incentive, you can receive free shipping when you enter the code, FREESHIPSAMPLER at checkout.

I recently started sponsoring 2 little girls through World Vision Charity.  We are encouraged to write letters and send along pictures to these children (sent my first letter the day after I received the info packets) and are allowed to send small items that fit into an envelope just a little bigger than a regular envelope, but there are restrictions – such as no jewelry or items that could be construed as expensive.

While I haven’t received any letters from either of these children yet (mail is a little slow in other countries, plus the whole volcano fiasco slowed my letters down I’m sure), I find myself looking at their pictures every day on my wall and wanting to let them know that there is someone a half a world away who is thinking about them.  I feel that while my money is going to their community to help them all thrive (a very important goal indeed), it is the personal touch that sustains people.

I do not keep it to myself that I had a rough childhood, but it was those people in my life who always made me aware that they loved me and that they were there for me whom I think helped me be the strong and happy person I am today.  It is for this reason that I want to let these girls know as often as I can that there is someone out there who cares about them, who knows that they can succeed in life and who believes in them.

This week, I thought I would make some little scrapbook journals personalized just for them.  In doing so, another lady whom I work with asked me to make one for her little girl who she is sponsoring.  This got me to thinking…perhaps all sorts of children would like a little journal to call their own, or even a wedding couple would like to use a hand-made book like this as their wedding guestbook.  So, I’ve decided to make some more and post them on our etsy store.  In the meantime, check out the ones I made for these 3 little girls.  One of the girls, sadly, is not in school so I put the country flag and map as well as the world map in her journal – something to ponder (I loved maps as a child) and I had a friend translate the William Wordsworth quote, “Fill the paper with the breathings of your heart” in to Swahili for her.

Hope you enjoy.

I finished my two pillowcases, one for an adult and one for a child, and will be dropping them off at Rosie’s Calico Cupboard next week.  I had so much fun finding the fun material for the children’s pillow case and went through all the  fabric I already had and found big enough pieces to make the adult pillow case.  So if you are short on cash, you can still donate by just looking at what you already have and making it work.  The patterns are free and downloadable online; so what better use for your left over material?

The story on how the 1 Million Pillow Case donation started is a good one. A mother was visiting her son in the hospital and noticed he was depressed and missing home, so she thought she would bring a little home to him, something special  to lift his spirits.  She made a pillowcase from sports material, because he loved sports. At first the nurses said she couldn’t leave it, so she went to the hospital administrator and got permission to leave it for her son. Well, it wasn’t too long before the hospital staff noticed how the boy lit up when people would ask him about his pillow and he could tell them how good he felt having it. When the nurses saw how much better the boy was doing the nurses started asking the mother if she wouldn’t mind making more for the other patients. One thing lead to another and 1 Million Pillowcases was born.  Now they are made all over the country and distributed to not only hospitals but senior homes, battered women’s shelters, aids patients, foster homes and many more places where love and warmth is needed.

I am so happy to be donating my 2 pillow cases, they were so easy to make and the web site makes it simple to find a location where you can drop them off.  We have two donation locations in the San Diego area.  You can click here to view donation locations all over the country.  Join in the fun and have a heart warming experience by helping reach the 1 Million Pillow Case goal.

There are great giving back projects that are super easy and give back in a big way. “The 1 Million Pillow Case Challenge” is one of them. I am going to contribute to this cause and will share my pillow cases with you when they are completed. If you belong to a sewing group, get them involved too!

American Patchwork & Quilting is challenging you to join their efforts to Make a Pillowcase, Make a Difference. Every pillowcase can make a difference in your community. A pillowcase can provide comfort for a cancer patient, hope for a foster child, encouragement for a battered woman, or beauty for a nursing home resident. Once your pillowcases are complete and donated locally, (“Rosie’s Calico Cupboard” is one of the donation drop off sites), you log onto the American Patchwork & Quilting  site to enter how many pillowcases you made. Help reach the goal of ONE MILLION Pillowcases. This site even gives you free download pillow case patterns!

If you plan on participating, we would love to hear your pillowcase plans and send in your pictures to us too!

So when I got the De-clutter bug this spring after I read my son-in-law’s e-book “A Minimalist Life” byLeo Babauta.  It is a great book to motivate you into decluttering your own life.  I didn’t feel the need to get rid of everything, but did feel inspired to De-clutter ! So…I put out the word for suggestions on places where I could donate all my “stuff” after I De-cluttered, and I got back some great places I thought I would share with you.

I had a bag of old batteries, all different sizes, that I have been adding to for years hanging in my garage, gone.  My next dilemma was all those bags of soaps, shampoos, and lotions brought home from the hotels I stayed at.  I was sure I was  going to use them or put them out for my guests when they stayed over. NOT!  Now I could donate them to my local Woman’s shelter, Faith Mission, or Salvation Army and feel good about it. My son had an old laptop computer he didn’t need any more, we found a place that takes computers for kids who might not have any other way of getting one. Then there were all those stacks of paperback books, and between my son and I, we had a lot!

Sending your treasured items to a good place, makes it so much easier to part with them. So when we found out we could donate to soldiers, we gave and gave. We could also give our old cell phones to a soldiers’ cause.

Ok, what’s next…Oh yes, my pile of reading and regular glasses in the bedroom drawer – out!  And, to a great place I might add.  My 8, yes 8, boxes of clothes donated to a wonderful place.  I am a crafty person so I should say no more, bags and boxes of craft items donated, including, but not limited to, a bag full of real wine corks that I so diligently had saved for some mystery future use.  And then there were the boxes of old greeting cards, new and used, out to someone that can recycle and make use of them.

For things I wanted to keep, I reorganized, got containers and labeled everything.  Even all those games and puzzles that have pieces and parts that always go missing, and boxes that are barely holding together, into plastic containers.

Finally, for everything else, I decided to call a big truck and have them hall it all away! WaLa, a De-cluttered house, where I can actually see what I have in my closet to wear, a clutter free craft room (well almost) so I can create fun DIY projects for you and a clutter free home where I can put my feet up on an ottoman that is free of piles of magazines. M-m-m feels so good!

About this project:
Who knew that you could grow wheat in the mid-city of San Diego? David Krimmel, a community artist and wishful farmer, is doing just that. A vacant lot in North Park is being transformed into a field of wheat. Straw bales have been cored out and planted with wheat with the proposal that they be placed in the community business district.

What started as David’s desire to truly understand what it would take to grow, hand harvest and process grain for a loaf of bread has evolved into a community event planned for September 11th, when the community will be invited to help in the harvest festivities at the Art Produce Gallery.

To learn more about this project please join David at the Sea Rocket Bistro on April 11th. Locally grown grain and hand milling will be available. All ages are welcome.

So, my son goes to a wonderful daycare here in San Diego.  They are very involved with the community and many children’s lives.  Here is an email I was sent on Monday, Dec. 22nd:

I know I posted this around and you have probably seen Brandon on the news. He will be on the news again tomorrow right before chemo.

I have known Brandon since he was 2 years old. He is now 7. Brandon is this kid that has had so much energy and a crazy cool personality. He was diagnosed with cancer in the stem of his brain (look up DIPG). He is on tons of steroids and other meds with crazy side affects.

In a short time Brandon will become paralyzed right before he goes blind as it is with this type of cancer.

There have been other fund raisers for Brandon that have helped Brandon pack a lot into a small amount of time. We are now trying to raise funds as quickly as possible to hire a professional videographer and photographer that is least invasive to this family so that the best memories from this time are captured. We also want to allow a fund that will help many more family members to be able to afford more time from work as most of them are saving time off for the end. We hope they can afford some time now as well.

The other day Brandon was acting out a little and was put in a time out (trying to keep as much normalcy as possible). Then it was thought, Brandon doesn’t have enough time for a time out.

9 months is the average time this diagnoses allows.

If your even thinking about adding Brandon to your gift list, please don’t wait. We would like to do as much as possible as soon as possible. Look up DIGP and then please write any amount ( I mean any amount, I know times are hard for us all… no amount is too small, I really mean that).

Make the check payable to BRANDON SHIVELY BENEFIT FUND and send it to 1787 Pentuckett Ave San Diego, Ca. 92104. We will give any notes wishes prayers and money to the family.

Being a wedding planner and designer, I was in the unique position to have many wonderful vendor contacts, so I contacted two of my favorites:  Tim Otto of Tim Otto Photography and Marc Lehman of Ashley Video Productions.  These two wonderfully, giving vendors have offered to help this family obtain some very wonderful memories of their time together.  The details are still being worked out, but I do hope to post any updates that may come about.  Thank you, thank you to our wonderful vendors, Tim and Marc.  I hope that any of you out there who are looking for a photographer or videographer, give these two a little love back;)
