Whether your rehearsal dinner or engagement party is at a fancy restaurant or an outdoor park, you want to look nicely put together as well as comfortable and appropriate for the occasion. I’ve put together 2 examples of rehearsal or engagement dinner outfits on opposite ends of the spectrum.

This is a quick and easy 2 hour project that the kids and parents will love. Kids will feel so inspired to wear this fun apron and parents will have an apron that will keep kids clothes clean.  A win, win!  No pattern needed, just measure, cut and sew. For children 2 to 6 years old. Finished size, 18″ long, 19″ wide & pockets 6″ deep.

If you just want one and don’t have the time or skills or desire to make it on your own, you can visit YourLifEvents Etsy Store and purchase one that we will make just for you.

HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • 1/2 yd. fabric
  • Thread
  • Bias tape, if doing reversible apron
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine

HERE’S WHERE TO GET GREAT MATERIAL

Joann’s Fabrics has a lot of great fabrics on line including wonderful crafts. Rosie’s Calico Cupboard is a quilt shop that has wonderful fabrics not just for quilting of all different kinds, including the vintage look. Fat Quarter Shop has  Funky Monkey fabric and lots of cute kids fabric.

HERE’S HOW TO MAKE BOTH APRONS

  1. Using two ply fabric, measure 4″ across from folded edge and mark with chalk. Measure again from folded edge and mark at 9″ across and 9″ down. Make a line diagonally from 4″ mark to 9″ mark. Cut out.
  2. Mark and cut 2, 2 ply straps 2″ x 19″. Cut 1 pocket 6″ x 19″.
  3. Iron and sew down top edge of pocket 1/2″  If making reversible apron using bias tape, do not fold down but place fabric inside of tape and sew tape across top edge only, on both edges of tape.
  4. Pin pocket, wrong side to right side at bottom of apron. Pin right sides of apron bibs together. Omit this step if doing the reversible apron. Instead, pin fabric, wrong sides together, place inside of bias tape and sew all the way around. For both types of apron, measure 6″ from both raw edges of fabric and sew vertically, creating three pockets.
  5. Using a 1/2″ seam, sew front and back together on all sides, leaving 1″ openings at top and sides for straps. Clip corners, turn and iron. If using bias tape, sew bias tape all the way around apron on both edges of the tape.
  6. Fold horizontally and iron straps in half, right sides together.  Sew one end and one side closed, using a 1/8″ seam. Clip corners, turn right side out and iron flat. (Do this for both types of aprons)
  7. Fold in top edge of apron 1/2″ and iron. Place raw edges of straps and pin in each seam at openings and top stitch 1/8″ around all sides of apron and over straps. If bias tape used, fold in raw edge of strap opening, sew closed and pin to back side of apron and sew onto seam lines.

Tips:

The more you iron the less you need to pin.

Sew edge down or sew bias tape to top of pocket, before you sew pocket to body of apron.

I have said it a million times…I don’t like Tulle at a wedding.  I officially stand corrected.  Granted, when I express this opinion, I am usually referring to the overuse of it in wedding decor.  I have liked several uses in fashion and this time is no exception.

This romantic bridal capelet by Etsy Designer, ModernRomancepdx is so pretty, so stunning, so unique I just had to post it.  While it won’t be warming you up at your outdoor reception, it will provide for a little whimsy and perhaps just a touch of protection (I said just a touch).

Pretty, dramatic capelet of tulle with a silk ribbon tie. There are several ways to wear this versatile piece. Tie it close to the neck as shown or tie the ribbon a little loose to have the capelet fall more to the shoulders.

One size fits most. Available in white or ivory. (Will be made in ivory unless white is specified when ordering.)

This clutch from Etsy Designer, KellysKeepsakes is so pretty and so perfect for a garden or beach wedding.  The tan woven material fits perfectly with the beach or garden theme and the flower adds just the right touch to make it simply elegant for your beach or garden wedding.  She has others with various colors of flowers, so you could even match to your bridesmaids dresses.

What makes an apron too cute for words?  I say, it’s the fabulous fabric. From vintage chic to cool chic, there’s nothing like a personalized apron and pot holder to match your sense of style.  Get your 50′s homemaker vibe on in no time with this apron that you can make in one afternoon and be ready to wear it that night while making dinner.  My favorite local place to buy fabrics is Rosie’s Calico Cupboard Quilt Shop and it’s almost as fun shopping there as it is making the apron!

Here is a pdf of the illustrated instructions:  20100420134219018

MATERIALS YOU’LL NEED

  • 1 yd. Fabric (for apron)
  • 1/8 yd. Cotton flannel (for pot holder)
  • 1 Pkg. Rick Rack (contrasting color)
  • 1 Pkg. Wide bias tape ( same contrasting color)
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Iron

HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL DO FIRST

All pattern pieces are based on fabric that is doubled. See diagram #1 for pattern layout.

  1. Measure and cut a 15″ x 24″ square of fabric, for body of apron. Measure 24″ on folded edge.
  2. Measure and cut out 2 strips of fabric for apron ties, 3″ wide at fold, the width of the fabric.
  3. Measure and cut 2 squares for pockets, 6″ long x 7″ wide, on salvage edge.
  4. Measure and cut out 1 square for pot holders, 7″ wide x 10″ long. Cut open fold.  Same measurements for doubled cotton flannel.

HERE’S HOW TO MAKE IT

Apron:

  1. Pocket;  Diagram #2. Fold down top 1″ to wrong side of material, iron and pin. Pin and sew Rick Rack  horizontally on right side of folded material, 1/2″ down. Fold and iron the other 3 sides  of the pocket 1/4″.
  2. Open the 15″ x 24″ square of material to 1 ply. Diagram #3. Sew pockets to right side of material, 6″ from the top, all the way around the edge of the pockets. Place pockets where you’re hands naturally would go into a pocket.
  3. Also diagram #2. Fold the 15″ x 24″ piece of material in half with right sides together, and sew down each side. Clip corners. Turn inside out and iron.
  4. Diagram #3. Using you’re machines longest stitch, sew a basting stitch 3/8″ from the top edge, leaving a long tail of thread at the end. Pull the top thread carefully, loosely gathering into a slight ruffle.
  5. Diagram #4. Sew one end of the 2 strips together and iron seam open. Iron the strips in half, lengthwise.
  6. With right sides together, center and pin gathered apron to straps  and sew together.
  7. Diagram #5 & 6. Fold and iron straps in half and fold edge of strap over 1/4″. Pin strap together over apron and starting at one end of the strap, top stitch the strap closed, stitching close to the bottom edge.
  8. Diagram #6. Sew Rick Rack horizontally, 2″ from bottom edge, across apron.

Pot Holders:

Makes 2;

  1. Diagram #1. Pin cotton flannel inside of each piece of material to wrong side, stitch close to edge all the way around. Trim flannel close to stitch.
  2. Diagram #2. Pin and sew Rick Rack 2″ from top and bottom, to right side of material.
  3. Diagram #3. Fold material in half with flannel facing in, Rick Rack on outside of material. Iron.
  4. Diagram #4. Open bias tape up and place pot holder inside. Pin and sew wide bias tape all the way around, leaving 3″ of tape at the end, at corner, to loop over and tuck into the last couple stitches to close.

When I was a wedding planner, the Moms of the bride and groom were always asking me where they could go to buy a nice dress for the wedding.  Their dilemna was that they didn’t want to look like they were trying to compete with the bride, but wanted something that would present them as an honored guest as well as befit the style and presence of the woman that they are.

Many bridal salons carry a selection, albeit limited, of Mother of the Bride/Groom dresses, so definitely ask them to show you their selection when you’re there to look at bridal dresses with your daughter/daughter-in-law.

For those brides out there who want to give your Moms a little hand in searching, check out these pretty Mother’s dresses for your wedding.  And, for you Moms out there, if you don’t find your dream dress here, we hope this gives you a little inspiration for exactly what you’re looking for.

Mother of the Bride Mother of the Groom DressBy Etsy designer, violavintage, this custom made halter style dress reminiscent of the 50′s is a perfect glamourous dress for the upscale wedding.  Have a jacket made with 3/4 length sleeves in the same fabric and it’s picture perfect as a Mother’s dress.

$195

Mother of the Bride Dress Mother of the Groom DressFrom Etsy designer, MandyH8800, this dress is such a classic, and mom would be sure to love! Long sleeves make it great for an upcoming fall wedding, or chilly climate.  Dress Features:
Fully lined with fitted bodice, with sweetheart neckline, princess seams and back separating zipper closing, in a slightly flared evening length.

$129.98

Mother of the Bride Dress Mother of the Groom DressFor a somewhat casual wedding, this dress by Etsy designer madebyferdy, has a great pop of color, covers the arms like so many Moms want yet still show a bit of leg (while still covering the knees - another Mom request).  It shows off the most beautiful part of a woman (in my opinion), the Décolleté.  This wonderful dress has a detailed collar featuring a double sophisticated silk satin. The dress comes with a fitted bustier bodice and a A-line skirt. it also has a false split on the front side.

On sale right now for $99

Mother of the Bride Dress Mother of the Groom DressI love this dress by Etsy designer, madebyferdy.  It is modern, has that one-of-a-kind look and is upscale enough to be worn by Mom at a semi-formal wedding and the best part is that she’ll be able to wear it again.  Again, it covers the Mom requirements of covering the arms and dropping below the knee.  This is a wonderful dress, very detailed collar feature doubled in sophisticated silk satin. The dress comes with a fitted bustier bodice and a A Line skirt with a false split on the front side.

On sale, at $99, Moms should have no problem buying such a fantastic dress.

Mother of the Bride Dress Mother of the Groom DressFrom Etsy designer, myblackdress, the custom-made Lucy dress is another classic with retro-inspired feminine elegance. Comfortable, yet stylish, this dress fits with any occasion–perfect at an afternoon BBQ paired with a big hat and flats, or a glamorous cocktail party with heels and pearls.  And, yes, a black dress can be worn at a wedding provided that it is not a very casual wedding.  Dress up or down!! Gathered full skirt with wide-waist cumberbund. The fully lined top has 3/4″ back collar and short cap sleeves. 100% cotton sateen which gives it a little sheen. Side zipper. Gentle hand wash and line dry, or dry clean.  Check out the dress on the designer’s page to see actual customers who have sent in pictures – one in a pretty white/ivory satin.  This is a perfect dress for a Mom (or anyone for that matter) to wear to her son or daughter’s wedding.

I love this first dress.  I am a sucker for any dress with pockets.  If my wedding dress would have had pockets, it would have been PERFECT!!!  I don’t like carrying a purse and really only need enough room to carry my phone, my license/credit card and my lipgloss so a dress with pockets is my dream.

From Etsy designer, PantorabyAndrea, the Ms. linda Bridal gown, is made of silk tafetta, with piping and cording detailsaround waist line. The silhoette is A line with 1.5 foot train.

Secret Detail— Pockets, there are invisible side seam pockets (you can order it w/ out)… They are great for picture purposes.

Spring/Summer Wedding Dresses Under $1000Pretty in vintage pink.  Who says wedding gowns should only be white or ivory.  It’s your day, you should match it to your personality girlfriend!  This dress is soooo fun!

From Etsy designer, bellinabridal, this Kelley gown is the ultimate feminine pink sugar gown with a slight edge. Made from a picture of a vintage dress sold by a fellow Etsian in her shop Timeless Vixen Vintage. I created this dress at my Bride’s request with a little different color, chiffon material and the skirt lifted a tad at the bodice. This gown is AMAZING!  Some of the pictures are of Kelley wearing her dress in Jamaica! The traveling dress!  The gown pictured is the finished result made by Bellina Bridal!  Requests to change colors, style, add a train, crystals, etc are always welcome.

$965

Spring/Summer Wedding Dresses Under $1000Retro Hollywood Glamour is the best description for this beautiful wedding gown.  From Etsy designer, ellanacouture, this very elegant wedding dress was inspired by retro celebrity red carpet gowns.  Flattering V-neck, slimming gathered sash, gorgeous bias cut skirt, stunning open back with crossed straps, small sweep train.  Light ivory superior finish bridal satin drapes beautifully in this style adding to the overall vintage glamour look.

If you’re looking for something a little different and a little vintage for your wedding jewelry…if you’re having a vintage or Parisian themed wedding…look no further.  A few weekends past, we were visiting Leonesse Winery to pick up our wine shipment and came across Alchemy Studios at the winery’s little craft fair.  Christine’s vintage handmade jewelry is absolutely lovely and immediately transports you to a French movie where you’ve stumbled upon a little gem (no pun intended) while out and about.

Above are some pictures of her cute stand and her pretty baubles that we think would look oh so feminine worn by a vintage inspired bride.

A couple weekends past, we went to Leonesse Winery in Temecula to pick up our wine shipment.  While we were visiting, there was a lovely little craft fair being held and we came across the cutest, retro/vintage, hand-made aprons by The Cottage Seamstress.  Not surprisingly, since I love most things Etsy, they have an Etsy store.

The description on their super cute postcards reads, “Unique aprons from modern to retro for adults, teens, and children!”  I’m fairly certain I want to get one for my son who loves to ‘do dishes’ and get himself fairly wet in the process.  I’ve included some pictures of me with some of the aprons as well as some cute pictures from their etsy store.

All you nesters out there, aren’t you ready to add one or two of these to your new little nest?
