I seriously don’t know what my fascination (aka excessive obsessiveness) is with garden weddings this season.  I just love them.  The pictures they conjur in my mind’s eye are so romantic and ethereal.  Plus, I love the look of hand-made items.  As any reader of this blog knows, I am an Etsy fanatic (as I should be since we have our own Artsy Chic Etsy store), so I created a cool treasury of Etsy items that give inspiration for a Summer or Spring Garden Wedding – click here to view the full inspiration board

I was perusing my emails today and there was an orange blossom in one of them.  Looking at it made me dream of warm spring days, fresh air with the wafting scent of orange blossoms, drinking crisp wine with friends as our kids ran around.  Such an idyllic daydream, no?  When I came out of my reverie, I thought that the orange blossom would be a good inspiration for a wedding theme and got to working on these two inspiration boards.  What say you?  Any comments, additions, suggestions, or even your own orange blossom inspiration board to share?

Whether your rehearsal dinner or engagement party is at a fancy restaurant or an outdoor park, you want to look nicely put together as well as comfortable and appropriate for the occasion. I’ve put together 2 examples of rehearsal or engagement dinner outfits on opposite ends of the spectrum.

I received an email today from Etsy reminding me that Emerald is the color/birthstone of May and thought this could be great inspiration for a May bride or even a couple who shares May birthdays, or perhaps a way to incorporate a loved one into your wedding whose birthday is or was in May.

Pictured above are some fun items, I found on Etsy with the Emerald inspiration that could be used in a wedding with the links listed below:

The Emerald Headband would be a cute option as an accessory for your bridesmaid’s hair.  Also shown is the headband used as a belt – I just love the peacock feather!

The Emerald Garter for the bride is super cute and will match your Emerald bridesmaid’s accessories too.

The Emerald Chandelier Necklace would be a stunning showpiece to wear for the Mother of the Bride or Mother of the Groom to wear with a lovely simple wedding day gown.

The Emerald Earrings would be a nice gift from you for your bridesmaids to wear with their bridal attire.

Don’t forget the Groom and his groomsmen!  Shoes make the man and the Emerald Green Ferragamo Oxfords would be just the right touch for them to fit into your Emerald Wedding.

The lovely gradient Emerald Chiffon dress would be a beautiful summer or spring option for a bridesmaid dress and I bet this would be one they would want to wear again and again.  It’s a good style to fit many different body shapes too.

The Emerald Garden Necklace would be a pretty option for your bridesmaids to wear with a simple bridesmaids dress, especially if you’re wedding theme incorporates other garden elements.

In response to one of our reader’s comments who asked how she could incorporate her love for tiger lilies and her fiance’s love of baby blue, we’ve come up with the color scheme of orange and baby blue.  Not only are orange and blue complimentary colors, but they are very retro while being very hip and modern.  They great colors for a wedding too because they instill a sense of whimsy and fun while still providing for that bit of romance.

Here is our inspiration board for Margot and others:

I LOOOOVE catalogs.  Seriously, they are like window shopping, but so much safer since I have time to back out before spending way too much money.  The number of catalogs I receive drives my husband nutty, but ocassionally he’ll come across one that he knows he shouldn’t throw directly into the recycle bin.  One such catalog came in our mailbox the other day, Plow & Hearth.  I liked everything on the cover which is dangerous from the start.

As spring and summer approach, my itch to start planning lots of outdoor parties at our house kicks into high gear along with my itch to buy things for said parties.  Catalogs are where I can imagine my dream backyard perfectly decorated with every cool and comfortable amenity and every party luxury that would make my home the house where everyone wants to come to for a summertime party.

I save these catalogs, mark the pages and insert them into my listideas.com wish list registry (a very cool website by the way) where I can always return and slowly purchase every last item;)  This week, I found these super cute, super cool items at Plow & Hearth and thought I would share them with our readers because I could see them being used for weddings, parties, nesting & more.

This concludes my catalog dreaming for the day.  I find that parties and weddings are on my mind 24/7, so no matter where I go or what I’m looking at, my thoughts always tend towards, “how could I use that for a party?”  If you are getting married or about to host a party, try this same method.  You’d be surprised where you find some great inspiration.

The Question posed:

Shauna,
My Fiance and I are getting married this September 25th and we were contemplating having the reception on a harbor cruise boat and having it be a “classy pirate theme” haha, if such a theme could exist. My fiance is a Captain in the Marine Corps so we thought that it would be clever (and probably dorky but who cares) since he is a captain and I will be his 1st mate?!
We thought we would provide a “treasure chest” of dress up items such as hats, swords and eye patches to add a little fun for pictures etc. However I was wondering if you have any ideas as far as how we should style our invitations , and decorate the reception area to go along with the theme but not make it look like a party store raided the boat.
Let me know what you think, any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks so much-
Vanessa

YLE Answer:

Without knowing things like colors you’ve chosen or more specific criteria, we’ve come up with an array of thoughts and ideas for you to ponder on as well as an inspiration board to start you off.  This inspiration board is a jumping off point and should be more narrowed down once you’ve more developed your theme.

Based on your question above, we started off with using the compass as our main thematic element and the nautical rope as our second thematic element and went from there choosing invitations with a compass and a small rope (etsy ExQuisiteInvitation).  Our advice is to use these thematic elements or your own to help you create a cohesive look to your wedding.  You won’t need to do much actual decorating of the boat (nor will they probably allow you to) in order to get your message across to your guests.  We absolutely LOVED the compass escort cards from Etsy designer LH Calligraphy and think these are a MUST to really take your wedding to the next level.

To continue with the theme we’ve chosen, we found a couple of cake designs with a compass on them and really like the idea of either using the rope for the cake to sit on top of or even a nautical map.

As for centerpieces, you don’t want to hit your guests over the head, or like you said, make it look like you raided a party store.  We love the tall cylindrical vases with the bases wrapped in the nautical rope.  The idea of using various designs of one vase with just colored water and the rope, one vase with submerged orchids and the rope and other vases with a small amount of colored water and a candle is not only beautiful and sophisticated but will also bring down your costs.  Other options for centerpieces are simple vases filled with sand, shells and beach grass or even a large cluster of shells.

Another cute decor option is to find fishing net and use it either as overlays or as placemats (see lower left picture in inspiration board).  Again, this will tie into your theme, look nice and will bring down your costs of ordering really fancy table linens.  We also like the idea of tie’ing each napkin with the nautical rope.

Because you are setting out a chest with costumes for your guests to dress up (a fun and whimsical thing to do, I Love it!) I would suggest creating a small ‘photo op’ area with these costumes.  Perhaps buy a large captain’s wheel from Toys R’ Us that people can pose with and leave out a polaroid camera for people to take pictures along with lots of extra film and an Adesso photo book for everyone to slip in their picture and sign your guest book.  Create a cute sign (with the compass motif – JL Mould on Etsy has a great stamp) telling your guests to take 2 pictures – one for you and one for them to take home as a parting gift.

Speaking of parting gifts, it is my belief that edible favors are always great ones to receive – especially at the end of the night after drinking;)  And, I am all about personalization.  Do you have a cookie or bar recipe you are famous for?  Anything passed down through you or your fiance’s family?  Gather your girls, your Mom, your Mom-in-law and have a day of baking.  Put the cookies or bars in clear plastic baggies (papermart.com) and seal with the cute nautical stickers shown on the upper left corner of the inspiration board (from Etsy designer, DetailsDelights).  On the front of the bag, add another sticker that says Thank You and your names and wedding date.  Perhaps DetailsDelights would be delighted to create a personalized one for you that includes a smaller version of the compass.

Hope this helps.  Remember, if the compass isn’t quite what you’re going for, that’s okay.  Just find one or two items that are within your theme and let those be your, well, compass to guide you;)  And, here’s a cute little saying that you could include throughout your wedding if you so choose:  Love is the Compass of Life.

Oh, and as for you being the 1st Mate and your Fiance being the Captain, I suggest making cute signs for the backs of your chairs that say exactly that.

If you’re getting ready for your honeymoon and you are concerned about having to pay extra for your luggage, then here are some tips on packing light.   When I travel, I’ve learned that using one staple in many different ways is where you want to start.  Here’s some inspiration that I created for you with comfortable denim leggings:

As an interior designer and lover of all things fashion, decor and design, color holds a special place in my heart.  At school, I took extra classes in color theory loving the ‘science’ behind color as much as the pure design esthetic.  I am often asked how one can choose the right colors for their home, wedding or clothes.  My answer to those who are ‘color challenged’ is a simple one – look to nature.  Nature doesn’t make mistakes, the colors you see nature put together, not just pretty green and brown, naturally go together and can be used to create a lovely environment.  Thinking of a color scheme like purple and yellow?  You may think that it’s a bit of a funky color scheme until you imagine an Iris with its beautiful purple petals and a hint of yellow.  On the technical side, violet and yellow are actually complimentary colors.  In areas where the technical side of color matters – think haircolor, this is a very important aspect.  If your hairdresser colors your hair and the effect is too “brassy” (aka yellow), they will use a violet toner to cut the brassiness.  In design, the colors complement each other on the opposite ends of the color spectrum.  The key is the way the color is used.  Let’s use this color combination as an example of how to use a funky but natural color scheme into a beautiful inspiration board for a wedding.

We recently started designing window displays.  Below are some pics of our displays at Disconnected Salon in North Park.  If you haven’t been to Disconnected, you have to check it out – it’s uber hip, chic and with a bar inside – fun, fun, fun!

I’m sure you’ve all seen those cool inspiration boards where brides, designers and wedding planners pull together all sorts of nifty pictures to create a Mood for how they picture their wedding, event or even living room design.

Professionals usually use a program like PhotoShop or something else that is equally expensive and difficult for many to use.  Another option for Brides is to use PowerPoint, convert the powerpoint to a .pdf and then save the .pdf as a .jpg, thus allowing you to upload as a picture (we utilize this way a lot), but as you can see, it’s a lot of steps.

We recently came across a nifty (and free) site that helps you create mood boards in a simple, easy and fast way.  You can upload your own photos or use photos you found online.  You can utilize 4×4 squares or a variety of other layouts.  Check out http://bighugelabs.com/mosaic.php to play around a bit and make your own Mood/Inspiration Board for your Wedding Day.

The picture above was done using the Mosaic Maker site too;)  It was very easy.  Although, the saved copy had a lot of white space at the bottom, so I did have to open it and crop it so it displayed nicely here for you.

Have fun!

The feel of a fall inspired wedding is that of comfort and warmth.  Think about the holidays during this time – Halloween, Thanksgiving – both holidays make us think of things like warm apple cider, family gatherings, comfort food and the inviting smells of home-cooked meals.  To begin your inspiration for your fall themed wedding, think of the things that most inspire you during this time.  For me, it’s the time of year when I break out all my yummy smelling spiced candles and my home always has this comforting warmth to it where I just want to cuddle in a blanket with my son and husband (as if my son would sit long enough for a cuddle).

YourLifEvents has come up with an inspiration board that provides some creative ideas to not only help you fall in love with your wedding, but ways to add that spice to your fall wedding.  It can be from your colors, to the reception location, reception décor, beverages, and of course your guest favors.

When it comes to your fall wedding, let your lives and the season be your inspiration for creativity.  Fall for Your Fall Wedding Inspiration Board

Fall Favors:  For favors, you could buy canvas, drawstring bags and fill them with home-made cookies, dried fruit, or spiced candles.  Place the favors in pretty baskets with home-made signs thanking your guests and inviting them to take a bag on their way out.  If you opt for something like home-made cookies (edible favors are a favorite among guests), you can talk to your caterer about setting up small cartons of milk in buckets of ice for your guests to take home for a midnight snack.

Fall tabletop:  Imagine beautiful fall inspired linens that set the tone for your table (see inspiration board photos for examples).  Compliment these linens with a centerpiece that draws from nature.  Large clear cylindrical vases that can be partially filled with a variety of different options depending on your reception location – copper, burnt orange, and champagne gems if you’re looking for a little bling; sand topped with river rock if you’re going for the beachy vibe; miniature pumpkins/squash if you’re going for the literal translation of fall.  Depending on what you fill your vases with, you then add elements that compliment them.  Place hollowed out pumpkins filled with spices and candles around the table to give a pretty glow and a lovely scent that won’t compete with the food.
Fall Inspiration:  Here are some ideas (many of them DIY) I imagine for a fall wedding, I hope they inspire some of your own creative ideas.  First, I would start off with warm, inviting colors such as burnt orange, burnt red, deep green and/or chocolate brown, even a deep eggplant purple would be a wonderful addition.  Add a touch of pretty ivory, beige or sand to lighten the palette or act as a base and you’re all set.  In a location like San Diego, you may think that the traditional fall colors would fight with the beach feeling, but the opposite is true.  The beach is such a natural environment, it lends itself to many different seasonal elements.
