Now that I am a grandmother, I appreciate and find myself relating more to the things my mom passed onto me when she was living.  She would write down tips in a small notebook that she had read, like a recipe book, and then she would test them.  Here are a few that I will share with you, because we can never learn too much or have too much help.

  • To deodorize shoes, especially those sports shoes that come home and make a child’s room smell like something has died in there. Place a dryer sheet inside each shoe and leave it there over night. They are also good for the gym bag!
  • Out smart the bugs. Mix equal parts of baking soda and sugar, fill jar lids with the solution and place them in the trouble spots where you see roaches and silver fish.  Next day vacuum up the dead bugs.  Be sure to keep the solution out of reach from children.
  • Taming of the hair, that static electricity that is so annoying…quickly run a dryer sheet over your flyaway hair. I wonder if this also would work for static pants…have to try that.
  • Kill the bacteria, even our underarms can get a smelly bacteria build up. Take a cotton ball and put some alcohol or witch hazel on it and rub it in your armpits. Let it dry. Do this before you put your deodorant on.
  • Ok, you have got to love this one. Wet a dryer sheet and rub it on the shower doors and walls to remove mineral deposits and soap scum.
  • How do the microwave ovens get dirty so fast? Someone is not using covers, but there is help. In a 1 quart microwavable bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with 1 cup of water. Zap it in the microwave for 3 minutes. Use a paper towel to wipe off the condensed steam on the walls of the microwave and door. Wipe one more time with a clean damp towel.
  • Before you start sewing, run a needle and the thread through a dryer sheet, it helps keep the thread from tangling.
  • If you wash your own car, make it a bit easier on yourself. Prepare a solution of 1/4 cup baking soda in 1 quart warm water, wait for the baking soda to completely dissolve. Apply to your car with a soft cloth or sponge to remove road grime, tree sap, bugs and tar from car lights, chrome, windows, tires, etc.
  • And last but not least…have a dish that is just caked with baked on food ? Place a dryer sheet in the bottom of the dish, fill it with warm water and let it sit for a few hours. Then it should easily wipe out with a paper towel.

Ok men, here is your chance to step up to the plate !

The groom needs support also, so take your role seriously. After all most likely you are helping your best friend, brother or a close relative through a very special but often nerve racking time.

So here is your list to keep you on track.  Be prepared to serve as the go-to guy for information.  Direct guests to the restrooms, cocktail areas and the reception site.

First, you will be paying for your wedding attire, just as the bridesmaids do, whether you are renting or buying a suit or tuxedo.

Be prepared to attend all pre wedding activities, such as engagement parties, couples showers, bachelor parties (of course) and the rehearsal dinner.  Hey, there is going to be food at all of these gatherings ya know, it’s not so bad.

Help the best man plan the bachelor party.  Oh don’t tell me you won’t have fun with this !

Help the best man plan, with the bridesmaids the honeymoon get away car – fun, fun, fun (but be tasteful please).

Usher guests to their seats before the wedding.  When ushering a couple, you always take the woman’s arm and take her to her seat while the gentleman follows.  If several guests arrive at the same time or in the same group, usher the oldest first.

Buy a gift just from you.  The most favorite of gifts is a silver or leather flask, and having it monogramed is a nice touch. Sports tickets are also popular. Or you can go in on one outstanding gift from you and all the groomsmen. The gift should be the final good-bye to single life.  So make sure the gift is just for the groom, not to the couple.

A groomsman also walks down the isle generally escorting a bridesmaid, and will often be introduced with her at the grand entrance into the reception area.  There are even times when the groomsman dances with the bridesmaid he escorted down the isle.

Toasts.  Some groomsmen say a few words at the rehearsal dinner or the reception.  But please be appropriate with what you say, have fun, but remember this is a very special time in the grooms life and you want his memories to reflect that.  Also, this is not about you, and it’s not a time to tell the groom’s life story – keep it short (less than 3 minutes), sweet and simple.

Mother;)

It seems as if almost everyone is pinching their pennies these days. So, if you are trying to put on a wedding in these turbulent times, this can be a huge bit of stress.   Here are a few tips & ideas to take the bite out of the expenses and keep your budget in tact.  Keep in mind what makes a party memorable. People for one, interesting people make the party.  A wonderful setting, delicious food, some sort of surprise element and great music.  You don’t need all 5 elements to have a great party, but keep them in mind when you are picking out your vendors.  With that said, here is my list to help you through it all.

Wedding Dresses- Beautiful and dry cleaned wedding dresses are available at local shops that sell used gowns. Because they have been dry cleaned you would never know they have already been worn, and most of the time only once. Two places come to mind, Something Blue Bridal Boutique at 2802 Juan St. Suite 10 in Old Town. (619) 294-2583. The other is Second Act, West at 7556 Fay Av. in La Jolla. (858) 454-6096. You have to check these places out ! There aren’t just wedding dresses there.

Invitations- These days you can make some pretty incredible invitations and have them printed at your local printer, or on your own printer if you are having a small wedding, for a pretty reasonable price.  Buy your own paper at a paper where house and take it with you to the printers. Use your imagination and think about your theme and I am sure you can come up with something that says, this is so who we are !

Food- Try to pick foods that reflect the season and are readily available by the caterer, this can keep the price down per plate, per person.

Bartenders- Try USA Bartenders Bartending School, where you can line up a student bar tender.Students are tought more than 250 drinks from old fashion standerds to today’s Lemon Drop. Yumm ! 2750 Harbor Blvd. Suite A12, Costa Mesa. (714) 545-2700. www.californiabartendingschool.com

Music- An ipod with your favorite mix of tunes playing out of some larger speakers is an option, but only if you don’t plan on having a first dance, formal toasts and announced cake cutting.  If you want or, more appropriately, need a DJ, check around because prices are all over the board.  There are reasonable ones out there that are also quite good.  This is one of the areas where a good wedding coordinator can you save you money, time and head(heart)ache.

Theme & Decor- First let me say there’s nothing like lighting, lighting, lighting. Votive candle lighting (as many as you can afford), and a few perfectly placed uplights provide an inexpensive mood lighting option.  It can transform your room big time.  Keep your decor simple but cnsistent, you don’t need to overdo to get a stunning room effect, so do a few simple things to make your room pop.  Look to your own yard, perhaps branches you can spray paint white or gold or a color that your are using in your wedding color scheme.  Vases for the center of the table filled with pine cones and Christmas balls or sand, shell and beach glass. Think of who you are as a couple and incorporate that into your centerpieces. Do you both like baseball? Fill the vases with balls with turf at the bottom.  Or, golf.  Golf balls, tees and turf at the bottom. Use your imagination.

Table settings- check the rental places and of course, Craigslist.com to see if anyone is getting rid of their older stock, you might be able to pick up all sorts of items at a reduced price. Napkins, tablecloths & runners, charger plates etc. Keep your eyes out for sales and second hand shops that sell charger plates. Spray paint them silver or gold and your good to go. Above all, have fun and remember it’s the journey… Mother

Let’s get real, but not to real-vealing !

Your wedding website should give your family and friends exciting information on your wedding celebration itself, NOT, what argument you had with your bridesmaid’s sister or how unreasonable your mother is.  It is not a blog, and even if it were, it is not appropriate to discuss this out there in cyber space.

This is a place to include stories, but stories of your engagement, travel info, local hotels & activities, maps & directions, registry links and an RSVP link.
An ideal way to get the word out is to send a link to your website through your email.  Another way is to put your website in an insert in your invitation (like a response card) but NOT on the invite itself.

If you are using  just emails to communicate to all your guests, the appropriate way to use it includes, Save The Date, Wedding RSVP’s, Miscellaneous updates, and informal pre-wedding parties.

Remember, you do not want to create a flurry of gossip, rather you want to create excitement and anticipation leading up to your very special wedding day.
