This is such a great story, I can’t imagine ever thinking that it could happen.

In late 2008, a couple from South Africa crossed the Atlantic aboard the beautiful Queen Mary 2 and alongside the Queen Elizabeth 2, during the latter’s final voyage across the pond. While taking pictures of the QE2′s historic crossing, their camera slipped and disappeared into the deep blue sea.

In January of this year, fifteen months after the camera was lost, a fisherman trawling the ocean floor found the camera in his fishing net. The camera was inoperable but the memory card and photos were intact.

The fisherman viewed the photos, which included a picture of a woman standing on the deck of a ship with the QE2 at sea in the background. The fisherman contacted the BBC, where a correspondent determined that the passengers had been aboard the QM2.

Cunard was notified and the company was able to identify and locate the couple and reunite them with their photos, plucked from the bottom of the sea.

Now, if only my luggage that was ‘lost/stolen’ at the port in San Diego could miraculously re-appear – now that would be a feat!

Why I have not yet gone on a Sandals trip is beyond me.  Everyone I’ve ever known who has stayed at a Sandals Luxury Resort has only had wonderful things to say about it – even those who usually prefer their vacations to be a little on the adventurous/backpack side.

Now that we have a 2 year old, we’d probably be more likely to take a Beaches vacation, but again, have only heard wondeful things.

Alas, we are currently focusing on our house – landscaping to be exact.  While a vacation would be wonderful, there’s nothing like home sweet home so we want to make it our luxury included life.  But, I’m telling you right now, when we’re able, Sandals is soooo our next vacation.

Getting ready for your own holiday or honeymoon?  How dreamy does this sound to you?

Luxury Included Caribbean Vacation for Two People in Love

Come experience the very pinnacle of all-inclusive excellence in the Caribbean. Sandals delights couples in love with supremely luxurious accommodations, gourmet candlelit dining for two, gorgeous tropical settings and some of the world’s most exquisite beaches in Jamaica, St. Lucia, Antigua, and the Bahamas. Alan at Vacations To Go is always filling me in on all sorts of good travel deals and new and exciting things in the travel industry.  As a fan of cruises and interior design, I always like to hear about the exciting, new ships just built.  It’s amazing what these floating vessels have on them nowadays.  The ice bar sounds burrrr cool.  I love the idea of a studio stateroom for individual travelers.  And, if you’ve ever seen a Cirque show you know how amazing and talented the performers are, but to see them on a ship is amazing because even though you can’t feel the ship rocking, it most certainly is and these talented performers are basically performing on a slow moving teeter totter.

Cruises are great for honeymoons, couples travel and families.  Remember though, that even though you’re self-contained, you’re still on a ship with thousands of people, so don’t let your guard down completely, taking logical precautions with your kids and yourself (i.e., don’t go on a drinking binge, then walk around the top deck at midnight) in order to have a safe, fun and adventurous vacation.

Now for the good stuff shared with us from Alan at Vacations To Go:

In just a few months, Norwegian Cruise Line’s revolutionary new ship, Norwegian Epic, will make its debut. There are exciting innovations throughout the ship, from the stateroom design to the entertainment venues to the entertainment itself.

To start, 100% of outside cabins will offer private balconies, a total of 1,426 balcony staterooms. We’ve seen all-balcony ships before (though always on much smaller vessels), but the accommodations on the Norwegian Epic will also incorporate distinctive design elements such as curved walls, rounded mattresses and living areas arranged to maximize space. The bathrooms of these “New Wave” staterooms will feature separate showers and water closets and modern vanity sinks. Concealed LED lighting and domed ceilings will complete the relaxing, futuristic atmosphere.

The New Wave stateroom will feature upgraded bedding, linens and towels, Euro pillows, Elemis bathroom products, flat-screen TVs, mini-bars and MP3 connectivity upon request. Balcony and deluxe staterooms will offer additional amenities such as plush bathrobes, a customized fruit menu, priority restaurant reservations and reception hotlines, along with fresh-baked cookies at turn down on the last night of each sailing.

Norwegian Epic will also debut a category of staterooms designed with solo travelers in mind — Studio staterooms. These inside staterooms will be a bit smaller than standard, double-occupancy staterooms, but guests staying in these rooms will have private access to the Studio Lounge — a common area where passengers can enjoy a cup of coffee, play games with fellow Studio travelers or just relax. And the best part about Studio staterooms is that there’s no single supplement. They’re designed and priced for solo travelers.

There are plenty of firsts among Norwegian Epic’s entertainment venues as well. For example, the ship will feature the cruise industry’s first Ice Bar, where the bar, walls, tables, stools, glasses and life-size sculptures are all made from ice. There will be a cover charge to enter, which will include one or more drinks and the use of a fur coat, gloves and a hat while inside the icy room.

Other entertainment venues include the POSH Beach Club — for which passengers will be required to purchase a pass for the day or for the week to gain admittance — and Spice H20, kids-free outdoor areas that will offer exclusive daytime and nighttime activities; Bliss Ultra Lounge and Nightclub, featuring a bowling alley and casino gaming tables; and Halo, the Über Bar, reserved exclusively for guests who book suites in the Garden Villa or Courtyard Villa categories.

Finally, entertainment on the Norwegian Epic will be like nothing seen before at sea. The ship will host the Blue Man Group on every sailing and will offer Cirque Dreams and Dinner, with a waitstaff that includes contortionists, aerialists and circus performers.

Legends in Concert, the world’s longest-running celebrity impersonation show, will offer nine performances on each of the Epic’s 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries. And the dueling pianos of Howl at the Moon will perform in the ship’s comedy club, where passengers will have the chance to sing, dance and call out requests as two headlining pianists battle for supremacy.

Vacations to Go has a great service and I love their newsletters.  The post below is chalk full of information from their latest newsletter including great deals happening now.

From Alan Fox, Chairman at Vacations To Go:

Customers looking for the perfect tropical beach vacation often ask me for suggestions. We represent more than 1,300 tropical hotels and resorts, and in this newsletter I thought I’d offer some tips that will help you narrow down the choices and find that ideal spot.

Travelers on a tight budget will generally find that the cheaper options are relatively close, in Mexico — both the Pacific Coast and the Yucatan Peninsula — and the Dominican Republic.

Cancun is a terrific choice for those seeking a lively nightlife, but the town kicks into high gear when spring breakers descend during the month of March. Families with kids and those looking for a more laid-back setting should consider Playa del Carmen, which is about an hour from the Cancun airport and doesn’t get the party crowd. Cozumel is a 45-minute ferry ride from Playa, while the Mayan ruins at Tulum are a little more than an hour away. Cozumel has its own airport, so guests staying on this island can fly direct from the U.S.

For the broadest selection of all-inclusive resorts, where the upfront resort price covers accommodations, meals, beverages and activities, check out the options in Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. All-inclusive properties are plentiful and varied in these two destinations.

If you want to really get away from it all, some tropical retreats are truly off the beaten path. Anguilla measures just 35 square miles, and Peter Island is a privately owned island resort in the British Virgin Islands. Nevis, St. Kitts, St. Barts and St. Vincent & The Grenadines also offer an exclusive experience. There is an extra cost for the seclusion these spots offer and the additional flight time to get there. There are fewer flights, and you’ll have to make at least one connection to get to these destinations from the mainland U.S. or Canada.

Snorkelers and divers will find clear waters and colorful sea life throughout the Caribbean, but there are a few places that stand out. Cozumel boasts 20 miles of protected coral reefs and has been a favorite diving destination since marine explorer Jacques Cousteau shot a documentary there in 1961. Turks & Caicos, Bonaire and Exuma and San Salvador in the Bahamas are other good choices for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts.

Fans of deep-sea fishing should browse our resorts in the Florida Keys and along Mexico’s Pacific Coast — Mazatlan, Manzanillo and Los Cabos are all sportfishing meccas.

For golfers, challenging courses in beautiful settings are abundant in nearly all of the tropical destinations we offer, but you’ll find some of the best courses in Bermuda, Hawaii and Florida.

Nature lovers can explore the scenic hiking trails and white-sand beaches of St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands — a national park covers two-thirds of the island. Costa Rica is a top ecotourism destination, abundant with rain forests, waterfalls, 20 national parks, sparkling beaches and extraordinary wildlife. The forest preserves in St. Lucia, lush with giant ferns and wild orchids, are perfect for hiking and bird-watching.

Hawaii is a top pick for whale-watching (November through May is peak season), as is Los Cabos (from the end of December through March).

If duty-free shopping is a priority, look at Nassau in the Bahamas, Hamilton in Bermuda, Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands and Old San Juan in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

U.S. citizens who still don’t have passports can travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hawaii or Florida. You will only need a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license.

And finally, if you’d prefer to ski and snowboard rather than swim and snorkel on your next vacation, check out our ski resorts in the western U.S. and Canada.

Trip Advisor has just published it’s Top 10 Most Romantic Destinations.  For us, it would be Napa hands down!  My husband, who has never been to Napa (for shame!) has recently really become quite the oenophile (that’s a wine connoisseur to you and me).  He has even decided that he wants to plant vines in our front yard when we re-landscape so that he can eventually make about 20 bottles per year.  I am not one to shake a finger in the face of wine, so I am fully supportive of this venture.  I will say, however, my eyes start to glaze over at his ‘Cliff Claven’esq’ banter about wine and have to remind him that if he’s going to ‘educate’ me on all things wine, I better have a glass in my hand at the same time.

Trip Advisor’s best pick for Napa is in Yountville, CA – Napa Valley Lodge:

Napa Valley Lodge

This what one reviewer recently had to say about Napa Valley Lodge:

What a great hotel, everything about our stay was perfect! Our spacious room was lovely and cozy with a fireplace and view of the vineyards and surrounding hills. The gounds are beautiful and the staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast was also very nice with a great variety – and good coffee!! Very convenient to walk to any of the great Yountville restaurants. We will definitely be back!

$6.2K EGYPT HONEYMOON

$6.2K EGYPT HONEYMOON

From Romance Travel Concierge

Whether for the mystique of the mummies, the pyramids of the pharaohs, or the river that gave Egypt its wealth + power, people of all ages have been fascinated by this land. Today, its history, land + people have captured the interest of filmmakers, scholars, + tourists. But before that, Egypt had collected innumerable kings, pharaohs, + conquerors who viewed Egypt as an invaluable prize. As a result, Egypt has recorded six millennium’s worth of humanity, mingling the ancient + modern all in one place.

It has Alexandria, founded in 331 BC by one of world’s most famous man, Alexander the Great. This city by the northern coast was known as the Pearl of the Mediterranean. In the past, it was a considered as the link between Greece + the rich Nile River Valley, serving as the crossing point of three continents – Africa, Asia + Europe. Today, it is Egypt’s second largest city with beautiful coastlines + a new rendition of Bibliotheca Alexandria, a completely modern version of the ancient world’s most famous library.

Further down the Nile is a completely different scene. Cairo, as Egypt’s capital + largest city, was found in 969 AD, which is modern compared to ancient cities such as Alexandria, Memphis + Thebes. Interestingly enough, this “modern” city is eight centuries older than the United States. The city, because of its history, is a marvelous combination of Egyptian, Islamic, European + modern construction.

Egypt is a land of camels + cars, stone pyramids + concrete apartments, sand dunes + four-lane highways. And it is precisely this eclectic yet harmonious mix that makes Egypt what it is today.

Number 1 on the list for most romantic is a place I’ve actually been and I can attest to the romance – the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa.  Stay in an over water bungalow to really make the trip romantic – they even provide snorkeling equipment and a little ladder so you can snorkel right under your bungalow.  If it’s a cooler day, you can just sit out on your balcony and watch the fish under your feet because there is a window in your balcony and the water is very clear.  One caveat, Moorea is a slow-paced island, so if you’re looking for a bit of change during your honeymoon, we highly suggest splitting your time between Bora Bora and Moorea.  However, if all you want to do is laze about in the sand, play some water activities, take in a hike then stay here the whole time – we did.  The Dolphin Quest activity is quite the experience and one of the best things was the hike we took to Mouaputa.  The hotel or the shuttle driver can help you set up a great guided hike.  We also took advantage of the spa and found it very calming and I really liked how it was set so that you feel like you’re in the elements.

If you’re getting ready for your honeymoon and you are concerned about having to pay extra for your luggage, then here are some tips on packing light.   When I travel, I’ve learned that using one staple in many different ways is where you want to start.  Here’s some inspiration that I created for you with comfortable denim leggings:

For our first family trip, I combined it with a business trip mainly because the location was an amazingly beautiful spot.  Lake Louise, Canada is set in the middle of the Rockies.  We stayed at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise hotel right at the foot of the glacier, where as you can see in this video, you can rent canoes.  We purchased the 30 minute canoe ride, but wish we had done the 60 minute.  It was peaceful even among all the other people out on the lake.  If you’re looking for a honeymoon location with beauty, adventure, hiking AND pampering with great restaurants, the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise cannot be beat.  We can’t wait for our ten year anniversary because I think we may find ourselves here again.  Click the link of the video above to watch my silly video (I was a little afraid to turn around and tip the canoe).

In honor of the long weekend, well I’m taking a long weekend;), our product of the day is a pretty accessory for your Kindle.  I absolutely love my Kindle and wish I had it on my honeymoon.  I read a lot on vacation and since I can’t carry an entire bag of books, I have always had to count on finishing my book at the exact right time in hopes of happening upon a bookstore.  If you’re in a country that doesn’t speak you native language, you will be even harder pressed to find that perfect book.  Kindle  to the rescue – load 1,000′s of books, hardly ever needs charging, the pro list goes on and on.  One of those pro’s is the cute little cover you can purchase for your Kindle.  Today, we are showcasing the pretty one that I bought for my Kindle.

So, I’m one of those really weird people who have a list for everything, and I don’t mean a little list that you write, I mean I have serious spreadsheet lists.  This is one of the many reasons my husband and I were meant for each other – his lists are more ridiculous than mine.  I probably still have my packing list from my honeymoon and I usually make a list for every little vacation we go on.  Part of this stems from the minimalist way in which we like to travel now and therefore I need to painstankingly plan prior to packing anything to be assured I will look cute, but still only carry one bag.  Now that we have a child, all bets are off – our car always looks like we’re moving our entire household even when we’re just going for a few days.  But, I digress, one of those lists is the list of things we like to make sure of before we go on vacation (this is a list for the long vacation, not the long weekend):

  1. If going out of the country, first we check the U.S. Department of State website for any travel warnings (http://www.state.gov/travel/) and then we register our trip with them in case of natural disaster, etc. (http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/registration/registration_1186.html)  Registration at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate (in the country you are visiting) makes your presence and whereabouts known, in case it is necessary for a consular officer to contact you in an emergency. During a disaster overseas, American consular officers can assist in evacuation were that to become necessary. But they cannot assist you if they do not know where you are.
  2. We make copies of passports and credit cards (front & back).  We give a set to a friend whom we can easily contact in case of emergency.  The reason for the front and back of the credit card is because the international phone number is listed on the back.  If you lose your cards in another country, the 800 number will not work, so make sure you have the international number easily accessible.  I actually keep an copy of my passport in a separate location from my actual passport in case mine is lost and I need to go to the U.S. Embassy.
  3.  Stop all mail with the post office.  You can choose to pick it up when you return or have it start back up on a certain date.  Same goes for newspapers or any other regular deliveries.
  4. We set automatic lights to go off periodically while we’re away.
  5. While we don’t do this, I’ve read somewhere that it’s good to unplug your washing machine hoses because they break easily and can cause catasrophic flood damage if they break while you’re away.  Hmm, maybe this is something we should put on our list.
  6. Take care of your pets.  If you’re putting them in a kennel make sure you have an appointment well in advance and try to drop them off the day before you’re leaving.  I know you’ll want to spend as much time with them as possible, but in the rush of packing, etc. your animal will sense your urgency and may get nervous.  A day before allows you to have a calm demeanor and they won’t notice the 1 day difference.  If you’re leaving them at home, be sure set out lots of food & water (leave the toilet bowl up just in case) and ask someone you trust to check in on them while you’re away.
  7. Unplug computers and other electronic items that suck up electricity just by being plugged in.  Also, if your computers aren’t on a power strip and a storm comes through, you could potentially lose important data.
  8. Clean your house before you leave.  There’s nothing better than coming home to a clean house after a long trip.
  9. Don’t go grocery shopping the week before you leave.  We will forego the grocery trip (except for essentials) the week before our trip so we use as much as we can, not leaving items left to go bad.  It’s no fun coming home from a long trip, opening the refrigerator door and having to play ‘what died in my fridge and where is it?’
  10. And finally, if you’re traveling to airports that you’re not familiar with and will have to make connections, I highly suggest going online and mapping out the airport.  Know your gate, the connecting gate and any other gates the airline services (in case your connecting gate changes which is quite often).  You may be saying, ‘oh, I just do that in the airplane’, but not all airports are listed and sometimes it’s nice to have the map in hand and feel confident prior to getting on any plane that you have everything under control.  Click here for a list and link to many domestic airport terminal maps:  http://www.airportterminalmaps.com/ and click here for both domestic and international terminal maps:  http://www.internationalairportguide.com/

Above all, once the planning is done, let go and have fun.  Remember that with travel comes lots of snaffus and only patience and a good sense of humor will get you through many of the troubles.  After all, it could be worse -you could still be at work rather than celebrating your marriage with your new spouse;)

So, for our honeymoon, we went on a wonderful trip to Italy.  This was our 3rd long vacation together.  The first, was a cruise to the Mexican Riviera – easy, but not my husband’s cup of tea.  The 2nd was an experience I’ll never forget (both good and bad).  My soon-to-be husband at the time had the unique opportunity to work in England for a year.  I had the unique opportunity to take a leave of absence for a month to join him.  During that time, he took some time off for holiday.  We decided to visit Tenby, Wales (my Dad’s birthplace which allows me to be a dual citizen), a beautiful beach town for 3 days; Paris, France where another friend couple lives for 3 days and then on to Spain for 2 weeks.  At first, we spent every other day going from one location to another which meant unpacking/packing/unpacking – you get the idea.  By the third place, I felt like a sherpa and was nearing my breaking point.  I won’t go into details, but we promptly extended our next stay in Granada to 4 days – it was wonderful!

Our trip to Spain allowed us to learn about each other’s travelling styles and more importantly how to mesh each style so that we would both be happy.  I learned that I really don’t mind having only 1 bag – what!?  He learned that a girl needs to feel girly once in awhile;)

Like I said, our honeymoon was to Italy – for 3 whole weeks!!  We split it between 1 week at a cooking school (Torre Del Tartufo) and the next 2 weeks we only semi-planned.  We knew basically where we were going, but not necessarily when or what hotels.  We brought our Rick’s Steve’s pages for the places we planned on going and called around to the hosteles the day before we arrived for vacancy.  We were travelling from Rome to Tuscany, from Tuscany to Varenna, Lake Como, from Varenna to Praiano, Sorrento, Positano…and back to Rome again.  Basically, from one end of Italy to the other (and there’s still so much more to see).  Basically, this trip was going to require a lot of train rides so minimal luggage was required.  We had actually shared a bag in Spain(!!!) so I learned a lot.  Here are my tips for 1 bag packing for a lady:

1.  Make sure everything matches everything
2.  Easy dry fabrics for undergarments so you can wash and will be dry the next day.  You can find these types of clothing at places like REI or other camping stores.  They’re very cute nowadays too.
3.  Quite simply, don’t bring a different outfit for each day.  Get your mindset to the point where you’re okay that you’ll be wearing the same clothes every few days.
4.  The List:

  • 1 pair of jeans
    2 tank tops
    cardigan
    short-sleeve tee
    long-sleeve tee
1 foldable skirt that can be dressed down or up
really good flip-flops - I mean it, the kind you can’t believe you’re paying that much for, but your feet will thank you in the end.  I bought Chaco at Adventure 16 and I still wear them.  I have wood floors and they help my back when I’m at home
1 pair of wedge heels (esp. if there will be cobble stone streets)
    2 pairs of shorts
    1 bathing suit
hair brush, pony tail holder, scarf/headband (no blow dryer, flat iron, etc.)
    minimal make-up
dual shampoo/conditioner (you can do a deep condition when you get home)
rain/wind-breaker that can be rolled up into a tiny little ball
    comfy walking shoes
2 pairs of socks (not cotton, get the easy dry fabrics)
    2-3 pairs of underwear

We packed our clothes in a large backpack and any books/iPods, etc. in our daypack.  Now that the Kindle is around, I would sooo bring it.  Having to find books to buy or trade in another country wasn’t easy and I read a lot while on vacation.

Hope this helps.  Please comment with your own suggestions that have worked for you.

From our friends at Romance Travel Concierge (http://www.romancetravelconcierge.com/bali_trip_for_two.php):

$3.5K BALI TRIP FOR TWO

Crowned as heaven on Earth, Bali is embedded in the archipelago of Indonesia by the Indian Ocean, north of Australia. Its hillsides are carpeted by tiered rice patties. The valleys are entrenched with rushing waters. The beaches are lined with resorts + the newest shops. And the people who have inhabited this land still adhere to their peaceful Hindu religion until this very day. This combination of untainted beauty + preserved culture have captured the hearts of a growing number of tourists ever since the 1970s, resulting in the emergence of shopping centers + five star resorts that made Bali the top choice of luxury travel.

Yet unlike many developing cities, Bali is still an island where people farm on hillsides, sculpt in open courtyards, pray in century-old temples, + dance to the music of traditional instruments. Somehow, despite the influx of modernity, Bali has blended the best of both worlds without losing its unique character. Only in Bali could you stand from the balcony of your air-conditioned suite + take in the panoramic view of uncultivated jungle, visit the Monkey Forest by day + Hard Rock Café by night, or haggle in a traditional market in the morning + shop in the Nike store in the afternoon.

With just the right balance of culture + comfort, of antiquity + modernity, Bali is the perfect location for the trip of a lifetime.

If you’re looking to begin or end your honeymoon in a romantic, beautiful spot where you and yours can learn a little about Italian cooking while enjoying luxurious surroundings, Torre Del Tartufo is wonderful.

We spent the first week of our honeymoon here and it was great fun.  We met new people whom we were able to take day trips together and at the end of the week when we continued on to Florence, we all made plans to meet up again for dinner together.  The cooking school is fun and the food you make is amazing.  The free flow of wine is quite a plus as well.  The landscaping and grounds are secluded, relaxing & totally lovely.  Your rooms are amazing – Italian villa style that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time without giving up any amenities.

Here’s a clip from their website:

Torre del Tartufo

Torre del Tartufo is set on a hill totally secluded and offers absolute peace and quiet with spectacular views of the surrounding hills. Torre del Tartufo is 80km south of Florence, 12 km from Arezzo, 45 km from Sienna 35 km from Cortona and 10 km from Anghiari which is a picturesque medieval town. The house lies on a large estate (500 acres/200 hectare) consisting of Truffle fields Apple orchids, Hazelnut, Chestnut, Walnut and Oak woods). One river flows through the property with hiking trails making it an ideal location for walks, jogging or picnics. The house has recently been totally restored using original Tuscan materials throughout the whole Tuscan villa.
