With spring and summer months upon us, garden themed weddings are also in season.  I love garden themed weddings and love that they lend themselves to a lot of fun DIY crafts.  However, don’t try to DIY your wedding cake.  The skill that goes into these beauties require a lot of education and knowledge.  Here are some garden themed wedding cakes to give you some inspiration for your own wedding cake.

The Butterfly Garden wedding cake and the butterfly cupcakes are absolutely stunning!  I found these cake pictures on Cakesbylorinda.com.au’s flickr site where she has posted an amazing array of the most beautiful and whimsical cakes.

The Green Garden Wedding Cake is another pretty cake perfect for a spring garden wedding.  If your one of wedding colors are green, this cake is lovely.  Depending on your other colors, you could always change out the ribbon to match – green cake, brown ribbon or green cake, pink ribbon (or pink flowers) and so on.  I don’t know the cake designer, but found this cake at Polkadotbride.com

I LOVE lavender flowers.  The Lavender Wedding Cake is so simply sweet for a garden wedding.  I imagine the bride carrying a bouquet with the lovely smelling lavender tucked in and the guests throwing the sweet smelling lavender seeds instead of rice (better for the environment and the birds) when the newlywed couple walks down the aisle.  This cake was designed by jollybebakery and the photo was taken by Alexandra Grablewski Photography

Garden Butterfly Wedding Cake Cupcake by Pinkcakebox.com

This final picture is a cake made by pinkcakebox.com.  I love the use of cupcakes as well as regular cakes for the two top tiers.  The way they designed the butterflies to look like they’re actually flying and landing is beautiful.  This cake design would be perfect for an very natural setting garden themed wedding.

Cupcakes are special dessert treats that have been around since the early 19th century.  It is logical to realize that the origin of the cupcake was actually a cake, but who would have thought the cupcake would come so far and become so popular.  History shows that cupcakes really came about due to practicality.  Measuring tools for cupcakes were simply the more practical manner in which to bake.  Cupcakes were first made in muffin tins and now they can be made in cupcake tins that have special shapes like hearts, stars, and so many more options!  In fact, much of what was eaten when cupcakes were first invented was created in smaller portions.  Portions today are sometimes actually two or three times what a single portion once was.  For some reason as time has gone by, we have continued to super-size everything, including cupcakes (but let’s face it, that’s a wonderful thing isn’t it?).

Cupcakes are SO popular these days and since I love making cupcakes, I’m always on the lookout for new and unique ways to bake and decorate them. These new finds are going to take me to a totally new level of baking!  And some of the toppers and kits that are available are just plain funtastic. Take a look at these great finds for the week.

There are SO many pretty cups for cupcakes at “Bake it Pretty” you will have a hard time choosing which to buy.  They have a lot more than just cupcake items too.  The pictures above are just a sprinkling of some of their funtabulous baking paraphenalia.  Since we are so close to Mothers Day, I just had to put the a few ‘Mum’ items in too.  Check this great place out yourself, you won’t be disappointed.  Enjoy!

I just think cake stands are so cute.  I love weddings or showers or birthday party dessert tables that have cake stands displaying the yummy confections in all different shapes and sizes.  There is something so quaint and delicious about them.  In design, we learn to display items at various heights in order to give movement – it is more pleasing to the eye.  Displaying various heights of cake stands like these would be ever so cute at your next get together.  I love these cakestands from Etsy designer, VesselsandWares because you can interchange the ribbon to match the colors of your party – brilliant!  They even carry mini cake stands, cupcake stands and more.  Loving them!  How cute would these be as centerpieces at a baby or wedding shower?

My grandfather loved pie.  He preferred pie for his birthday than cake and my grandmother was always willing to oblige.  She made some of the best home-made rhubarb pie I have ever tasted.  They had a very large garden (especially for having a home in the ever congested State of California) that I loved to play in as a child.  From fruit trees, to green bean vines to strawberries and even rhubarb.  Our dinner table was always covered in the days pickings, but none more fun and precious than when Nana would make Popop pie.  We’d roll out the crust together and she’d do magical things with the berries and then we’d all sit around waiting and smelling the wonderful aroma of home-made pie.

Recently, while perusing other Mommy blogs, I came across a blog called The Busy Budgeting Mama who has some really cute ideas and posts along with this fabulous idea from Our Best Bites which is a single serving pie in a jar.  It is uber cute and it looks and sounds as delicious as it is cute.  I can imagine these being made as wonderful favors for a wedding, shower or party, or just to have stored in the freezer for something quick and easy to grab for your next potluck or to have on hand when guests stop by.

Check out OurBestBites to get the recipe and a great crafty way to decorate the jars by Lollychops.

I love spring.  It is hands down my favorite time of year.  This year, I am still waiting for it to be a little warmer and hoping that if I keep wearing sundresses, the weather will catch up.  Spring is a time of new beginnings, and fertilility.  Whether by giving birth to a new bouncing baby or a new project or a new, more positive way of thinking, spring is giving birth all around you and symbolizes how you can be starting anew in your own life.

I think about spring cleaning my home, my garage, and my psyche to make room for the new and wonderful things I am manifesting in my life this year.  I am always a list person, but springtime makes me want to make a list for every little thing.  I am excited to make my goals and lists, begin anew and give birth to my own springtime desires.

We are currently re-landscaping our front yard and it has felt like a long labor, but as it comes together, we are incredibly excited to start spending more family time in our new little sanctuary with friends and family.

This week, my husband will be traveling abroad and while I’m a little scared to be raising my son on my own for the next two weeks, I’m also very excited.  We will get to spend some fun and quality time together.  And, whenever my husband leaves for a day or two, I always want to surprise him by cleaning and organizing at least one room in the house.  You see, he’s a bit of a minimalist and as much as I’d like to be, I am well, not.  Spring cleaning here I come!  I’m not sure if I should tackle my office or my clothes closet first, or if being a single parent for the next two weeks, if I’m being entirely too ambitious.

Along with starting anew with my home, I am also a sucker for committing to get in shape at springtime -after all bathing suit season is just around the corner.  I rarely get caught up in the New Year’s Resolution, but springtime is my wake-up call that I better get back to the gym.

As with any good shopaholic worth her salt, all this springtime birthing can’t be done without a few good, new products.  Some of these finds are inspiring and motivating, some just fun and fanciful – all are items that will help me get that spring fever in full swing.

Everyone, and I do mean everyone wants to have a personalized, unique wedding, but when it comes down to actually creating a wedding vision many couples get caught up in how a wedding is ‘supposed’ to be and end up losing the very thing that will make their wedding so special – THEM.

When I was still a wedding planner, we were very in tune with getting to know our couples in order to help them make their wedding day truly represent their personality.  A wedding is so much more fun to design, coordinate and plan when you’re making it so very very unique to each couple.

With that in mind, remember that todays weddings can be anything your little couple heart desires.  You can marry the traditional with unique pops of your personality or you can throw out the traditional all together and make your wedding day one that no one will soon forget.

One way to give your wedding day a kick of your personality is to forego the traditional wedding cake.  If you’re not big cake eaters, why bother with spending $500+ on something that doesn’t represent the two of you?

There are many ways to take other desserts and fancy them up for your wedding day.  This doesn’t mean you have to be baking the day before your wedding day, bakeries don’t just bake wedding cakes you know and I’m sure they would be thrilled to offer some unique suggestions on how to serve your favorite pie, pound cake, cream puff, chocolate muffin…whatever your little sweet tooth desires.

PAINT CAN CAKE STANDS
Super easy, super cute ! Now there’s a way to recycle !
When your cake is brought in, have a wonderful stand to show it off. Your baker will have your cake on a tray, so give it the stage that it deserves. Depending on the size of your cake you can use Qt. or Gal. size paint cans.
In the example, we used different can styles all under one tray, to show many styles at one time. You would pick one style and do all 4 cans the same.
HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL NEED
  • 4 Paint cans, 1 Qt. or 1 Gal. depending on the size of your table and wood box.  Cans can be empty or have paint in them, just make sure the lid is on tightly.
  • Paper, wrapping or scrapbook paper or material
  • Ribbon, different colors & widths
  • Scissors or pinking sheers if using material
  • Tape, double sided
  • Pencil or chalk
  • Optional: Paper cutter
HERE’S WHERE TO GET IT
If you don’t have any paint cans around, go to your local hardware store and ask if they have any empties around you can have. Sometimes when people don’t pick up their paint or it’s the wrong color, you can pick it up for a really cheep price. So ask at the paint counter first. The rest of the supplies were purchased at our local craft store, Micheal’s.
INSTRUCTIONS TO MAKE IT
  1. Lay your paint can down on your paper or the material (make sure the lid is on tight) and mark the width and roll the can across to get the length. Leave a 1/4″ for overlap. Mark it with a pencil or chalk if using material.
  2. Cut out with your scissors or pinking sheers if using material.
  3. Attach to can using the double sided tape.
  4. Add your ribbon, using your double sided tape to close in the back.
Tip: You can also make a round circle out of your paper or material to go over the top of the cans, so it will look nice if you and your guests will be waiting for the cake to appear at the reception. Most cakes are already on the scene when the guests arrive, so there would be no reason to do this extra step.

Photo Wedding Cake

We found this great cake design picture on www.cakechannel.com.  What a great idea – pictures of romantic moments of the two of you, the two of you as children, and even pictures of your dear family members.  Each layer could represent a moment in your lives.  Done right, this is a great idea.  Keep it simple and you will have a truly personalized wedding cake that is also beautiful.

For our wedding, I wanted cupcakes.  I absolutely love cupcakes – a cake I can hold in my hand and eat?  Yes please.  As I’ve said before our wedding was almost all DIY, we were having non-traditional wedding – no DJ, no garter toss, no bouquet toss, no first dance, etc.  We had wine tasting, hand-made pizzas, wine tasting, champagne, wine tasting…you get the picture.  So, even though I’m no baker (and by the recipe below, you’ll note that I really wasn’t this day either), I wanted to bake and frost my own cupcakes, and I decided I wanted to make chai tea flavored cupcakes.  There was a bit of concern that the kids might not dig this flavor too much, but I threw caution to the wind and came up with my chai tea cupcake recipe.  Turned out that, besides the lot of wine, the cupcakes were quite the hit – especially with the kids.  So, here’s what I did:

I bought a Betty Crocker white cake box (no I’m not kidding), I substituted the oil for butter, and I added in chai tea spices to taste.  You’ll find that most of my recipes are ‘to taste’, some day I’ll actually have to pull out a measuring spoon just so I can give you a real recipe.  I also bought Betty Crocker white vanilla frosting and added the chai tea spices to taste.  Here are the spices I used:  cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cardamom, and allspice.

This was a fun experiment because I had to make a few batches and let my fiance, friends and family taste test until we got it just right.  I probably have the exact amounts written on a post-it note with my wedding memories.  I’ll have to find it and give you the proper recipe;)  Until then, enjoy experimenting with your own chai tea cake or cupcakes.

Wedding cakes are so beautiful, have you ever thought of having smaller cakes made as centerpieces for your guests’ tables?  Imagine each table having an individual centerpiece cake and when it’s time for the Bride & Groom to cut the cake, all guests stand, put knife to cake and cut together.  Symbolically, cutting the cake and feeding it to each other is the first task that bride and groom perform jointly as husband and wife and signifies that they will feed and care for each other.  How better to incorporate your guests into this tradition since every good marriage requires a great support system of family and friends.  A centerpiece cake should feed approximately 10 people and run approximately $75-100/cake.

I’ve talked about cupcakes before, and another idea is the mini-cake.  Similar to a cupcake, but designed to look more like, well a mini-wedding cake.  Very pretty and different from the traditional.

Finally, a DIY, super cost-effective option – the Individual Cheesecake.  Buy cheesecake, cut it into squares and decorate with pretty berries.  Buy a plain wedding cake stand, use ribbon in your wedding colors to line the edges, then place the cheesecake pieces on the stand.  You could also buy Petit Fours from a baker or from Costco.

For awhile there, cupcake cakes were all the rage, but regardless of fad or fashion, cupcake cakes are pretty and practical.  Personally, I love them, but that might have more to do with my cupcake addiction than anything else:)  I recently found this pretty springtime cupcake wedding cake (unfortunately, the picture came without a photo or cake credit).  If this picture inspires you, print it out and take it to your baker, I’m sure they can re-create it and make it personal just for you:

Springtime cupcake cake

Pictures are worth a 1,000 words, but the Don’t in this picture leaves me absolutely speechless.

Wanting a simple, ribbon cake is a lovely idea, but…

Don’t trust your wedding cake to your Aunt Sally who just took a cake decorating class and swears hers were the top of the class.

Do have a professional design a pretty, simple ribbon cake that you know won’t melt in the sun and won’t look like the local drunk just decorated your cake.

I love it when the unique and offbeat is still stylish and pretty.  PinkCakeBox gets it right:

“The Corpse Bride” Topsy Turvy Wedding Cake

This unique topsy turvy wedding cake is themed after Tim Burton’s The Corpse Bride. It has alternating tiers of white cake with hazelnut and chocolate ganache and red velvet with raspberry chambord and white chocolate ganache.

If you haven’t seen this picture yet, you’re in for a ‘viewing’.  While I’m all for the offbeat style, personally, I say this is good for a laugh.  I just can’t imagine anyone doing this on their wedding day or renewal of vows.  One, it seems incredibly narcissistic; and two, it’s creepy – and now you may eat the bride, ummm YUCK!  But, hey, she made the papers and I’m sure many blogs, so her 15 minutes of fame is complete.

Here’s the pictures and the original article as reported by the Daily Mail:

Bride has wedding cake made into life-size model of herself
Last updated at 13:35 10 January 2008

For one bride, her perfect wedding had to have that extra layer. So American Chidi Ogbuta had a life-size wedding cake made in her own image.

Standing over 5ft tall, the spectacular cake, made up of butterscotch and polymer clay, was an exact replica of the bride in her wedding dress.

The six-layered masterpiece was a dream come true for the Texan, and took pride of place when she re-newed her vows to her husband of ten years, Innocent.

“Growing up I have always wanted a doll made in my likeness,” explained Chidi, 35-year-old mother of four.

“So, when we started planning for our church wedding I told my husband that I wanted a unique, personalised wedding – a wedding where my dream will come true.

“I told Innocent that I wanted a life-size cake made in my resemblance – as I would look on my wedding day. He gave his consent without reservations.”

Initially Chidi wanted giant cakes made of both her and Innocent, 35, but the bakers, ‘Absolutely Edible Cakes’, didn’t have enough time before the big day.

It took five weeks to make the cake of Chidi – with the cake itself butterscotch and the body, head and arms made from polymer clay – after she supplied them with photographs of herself wearing the dress.

Given its size, there was plenty to go round the guests at the ceremony last September.

“We had over 500 guests and even after we had dished it out there was still plenty left,” recalls Chidi. “We brought the rest of it home and a week later it was all gone.”
